Subaru Outback Motor Trend road trip – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Manufacturers can get pretty cocky when it comes to naming their products. We can say with near-certainty that a Chrysler Sebring never turned a tire in anger at the legendary Floridian track and that we'd be surprised if a Pontiac Le Mans ever went fender to fender in France. Motor Trend has set about putting the Subaru Outback up against its Australian namesake in a 30-minute long web special hosted by none other than Editor-in-Chief Angus MacKenzie. This isn't your typical man-against-nature flick, though. Instead, Motor Trend has gone about creating an in-depth travel video that would be right at home on the Discovery Channel.
MacKenzie and his crew seem to trek across Australia's wild bits with relative ease despite large mud holes and plenty of soft sand, and we're left to enjoy the vast scenery of one of our planet's most beautiful continents. The finished product is less about power figures and 0-60 times and more about the actual trip. It's well worth taking some time during your lunch break for a quick watch. Hit the jump to take a look for yourself.

what Australia has to offer in terms of natura scenery is only a small subset of what N.American offers. Watching this was a yawner for us N. Americans.

        Speak for yourself.

The Legacy is called the Liberty in Australia.

The legacy name would not have been a good marketing tool coming from a japanese car manufacturer in Australia.

Legacy is an aid organisation to assist widows, families and orphans of those who died in war, starting after WW1 and is still very active.

Australia???? How about NYC, our streets are covered with hard, frozen snow. Small streets are not even cleaned properly. Whoever owns an Outback in NYC right now is one happy person.

All perspective and current SUV owners should be shown this. See the Subaru is far more capable than that 8000 lb school bus sized SUV you were going to plunk down $50K for. But, of course you will still sadly get the mouth breathing idiot 4 foot something Moms that have to have the GMC Denali XL to keep her two kids safe.

In my opinion, the Outback is the perfect SUV replacement. Excellent cargo, excellent comfort, excellent ground clearance, standard AWD (think 4x2 stuck every time it snows), and better fuel economy then those oversize useless SUVs.

Let's see.. compared to respectable body on frame SUVs.. the Outback lacks:

        1) Low range 4x4
        2) High ground clearance
        3) Articulation of solid axle

So yes, the outback is fine for majority of applications, but doesn't replace a truck based SUV by any stretch of the imagination..

        @ Bogman12

How many Tahoes, Suburbans, and Expeditions do you actually see using one of the features you described there?

Subarus may not flat out beat a true SUV for off road capability but few people ever get close to their vehicles limit. I still think the only company that produces a vehicle that is competitive with subies in the snow is audi. but they're twice the price.

on a side note, how was the drive back? heh

Do they still call the Subaru Legacy the Subaru "Liberty" down there? Seems like a better name (one that Jeep uses here).

Totally needs the JATOC 7 speed automatic to replace the JATCO 5 speed automatic.

For a second there I thought you meant the spare tire under the hood and was like "YESSS!!!!"
Then Subaru should put the 'donut VTEC' back on the engine, and get 300hp.

I thought it was quite interesting video. I find Australia to be a fascinating place.

One thing I think they should have done is overlay some kind of map to give us a better idea where they were and how they got there... saying "we are headed to _____" means nothing if you don't know the area.

Neat! That must have been a fun trek.
