James May rocks the Ariel Atom V8 – Click above to watch the video after the jump

The latest Ariel Atom sports 500 horsepower from its supercharged 3.0-liter V8, yet it only weighs 1,200 pounds. That adds up to about 900 horsepower per ton; a ratio that shames anything from a Lotus to a Bugatti Veyron. Sounds riveting, and Top Gear's James May had the honor of exercising the super-fast machine in a very thorough manner.

Beyond the jump is 12 minutes of TG goodness featuring the Ariel Atom 500. Not only did May have his way with the Atom, he then put the track day superstar against a Lexus LFA and a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera in a race from zero to 100 and back to zero. The super Atom then thundered around the TG test track in a one-on-one battle against the BMW S1000 RR, and of course, was handed over to The Stig for a proper power lap. Hit the jump to gaze upon the marriage of Top Gear and the Ariel Atom 500.

Can u really call this a car ?

I know its fast and everything... but if you did the same weight savings like no doors and etc i believe the lambo and Lexus would be faster.

You could see the driver fake-out coming from a mile but it was still funny.

I'm so glad they are back.

I like this new STIG. Some of the old stigs seemed so fluid and smooth in their driving styles. This new one corrects so quickly and gets the wheels squared off to surge forward so expertly that it's almost like they got a cyborg to drive their cars.

OK, loved the first Ariel Atom for the sheer craziness of it, this is just so ridiculous that all kids need a poster of this on their walls. BTW gotta love Tiff.

It's a shame that the Atom V8 is so expensive. That looks like a very fun track toy.

I think I'd buy the regular Atom and get a Honda tuning company to do over the engine for me, instead of spending the extra dough for the V8.

Can't wait to see how this thing rolls around the TG Test Track. I'm glad they let May drive it and not Clarkson though. He has such a different perspective on automobiles.

      **SPOILER**

I'm really glad to see Tiff Needell making an appearance... I know Fifth Gear is sorta a "competing" show, but they're never in the same timeslot, and usually air during different parts of the year... it probably shows that Tiff and Jeremy are still relatively friends, dating back to their long working relationship on the original Top Gear... I know Tiff (and VBH for that matter) appeared in one of Jeremy's direct-to-video specials last year...

(I didn't actually read the comment so...)

THIS is how you do a spoiler comment people.

        +1 for thoughtfulness.

I agree. I really like Tiff for short bits. He gets a bit grating when overused but you can't argue with the man's driving.

An amazing toy for the rich! Wow...

      bonkers!!

Yeah, the Atom is ridiculously fast but, IMO, it's really in a class all it's own. I don't call this thing a "car". It's a go-cart. And a damn expensive one at that.
