The Chinese news outlet Beijing Youth Daily (how's that for a name?) reports that BMW, along with joint venture partner Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd., will develop a 5 Series-based electric sedan targeted specifically at the Chinese market. Furthermore, the report claims that a battery-powered 5 Series concept will make its debut in China sometime in 2011. If true, then we suspect that BMW will unveil its electric sedan at the Shanghai Motor Show in April.

BMW Brilliance Automotive Co., the joint venture between BMW and Brilliance, currently manufacturers both the 3 Series and 5 Series sedans in the Chinese city of Shenyang. In 2010, the BMW Group sold 169,000 vehicles in China, a surge of 87 percent over the sales it tallied in that nation in 2009. The German automaker is not offering up any comments on the vehicle's status at this time.

      Hmm...

      -5-series is a big car.
-They want to base an EV on an ICE platform..which is weight inefficient.

-> It'll need a huge battery back to get reasonable range, and a high price tag.

Uh huh, and America won't get one right?

But ze EV can have uber power, why no for America?

German Hybrids are a joke. They seem like they are just for show.
They should bring the smaller diesels, because that's what they do best anyway. Why waste time on a mediocre powertrain for the USA and maybe Japan..

BMW has a 4 cylinder diesel ( 2.0? 2.2? ) unit that they stick in the 1/3/5 series over there. It has amazing power for it's size. Seems like bringing that motor over would be far cheaper than doing a hybrid.

Some days i wonder if there is a conspiracy to not give us the good stuff. Germany has never tried. Even our Golf comes with a 5 cylinder 2.5 standard. wtf?

No because se amerigans love ze big and ze pauerfull Vee eightt entschines with se german enginiiring in ze house.

same reason mercedes disables start/stop for the american market and refuses to sell the more efficient engines.

an American ze would never buy an gay ev.
the managers HATE the S 400 hybrid. the did only make it for se stupid eco americans.

I really fear they are going to be in trouble within the next 10 years. Like GM they believe WE ARE INVINCIBLE. Our big engines will sell forever...

No one has 'brought on the EVs' until a typical person can walk into a major US city dealership and buy one without a pre-order, waiting list or huge markup.
I don't see that happening for years.

Gotta love seeing these automotive companies coming out of the stone age and bringing on the EVs.. "Beemers" have always been one of my favorite car names (personal preference) so I hope they come out with some affordable nice electric sedans that make it in the market.
