2011 Fiat 500 – Click above for high-res image gallery

Fiat dealerships are just about ready to swap your money for the keys to a brand-new 500. If you are planning on being one of the first to park one in your driveway, we hope that you know how to drive a manual transmission – the first units being shipped to dealers in February will all be equipped with manual transmissions.

If you can't handle the three-pedal setup, you'll be forced to wait a bit longer for your Fiat 500. Examples equipped with the six-speed automatic will begin arriving in March and April. Then again, you may have to wait that long regardless of your transmission preference, since currently, only 20 percent of the 130 Fiat dealerships are ready to open. The first one, Motor Village in Los Angeles, is set to open its doors later this month.

-> Perfect, let these people will drive 500 learn the joys of driving a stick. For me on the other hand, I'd wait for the Abarth SS. ;)

I sat in one of the 500s that were in the Chrysler area at the NAIAS last weekend. My 6'1" self fit in there with a little headroom to spare, and it was just a bit cozy but not cramped. Not too bad though, until you look behind you and see that the car just ends a foot or so away. I recommend just putting down the back seats and leaving them that way so that nobody gets any bright ideas, like actually sitting there. ;)

      what you mean 'coming'?

its already here. I've seen about five of them out on the road weeks ago here in SD.

Actually, if you think about it, the 240sx was marketed to women in the US and now it's the dream car of every male between the ages of 14 and 24. The Miata is also chided as a "chick car", but it's pretty much the best lightweight RWD that money can buy. That's why more driving schools go with them and they have like a million different racing series formed around them.

And anyway don't worry. Women don't know how to drive manuals. (I kid I kid although I tend to encounter people with differing degrees of a sense of humor)

I only drive automatic. Sorry. And, no price is listed because they want to make sure they can gouge you as much as possible {much like was done with the New Beetle when it was first introduced}.

Just a question for someone in the know, but I thought they where going with a DCT vs automatic anyone know for sure which they are going with? Cause if they isnt a dct model then I guess I will be opting for the row-your-own.

Just like the Mini, this type of car is only fun with a manual.

      But... Are you kidding ?
Really someone in America can not drive a manual car?
Ok, also in Italy many cars now have the automatic transmision (I personally hate it), but for me is incredible that.
I drove just two cars with automatic... For me just for old men ;)

Probably more than 2/3rds these days. Bumping into someone who drives a manual actually elicits surprise these days. I remember this young female doctor telling me that she drove a stick Mazda 3 and it was obviously memorable enough for me to remember.
And even the people who do know how to drive stick often haven't driven it in decades so if they were to actually try and sit down and drive stick now they'd probably stall the car once every block lol.

Excellent decision. If you can't drive a manual, you shouldn't be allowed on the roads. End of.

Hands down the ugliest car of the century so far. You must really think J-LO comes with the car to be stupid enough to but this POS. Plus the combination of Chrysler, maker of the cars with the worst ride and handling in North America with Fiat and its reputation of the worst major automaker in Europe = what could go wrong? I don't what but you can bet something will. This could be the Yugo of the 21st century!

I just don't have the strength to denigrate every FAIL 500 thread Autorag posts.
      Here is the last one:

This is just more epic fail for the FAIL 500. Chicks generally prefer automatics so all these manual transmission cars will have to wait for all 37 of the pansy boys interested in this car to burn through them one by one. They will be still selling this lot of FAIL 500s in the year 2014 and a couple years later that same lot will all be recycled into sanitary napkin disposal cans. Oh wait, they are already that in current form. Nevermind.

        Reliability:
        Italian design with Mexican manufacture.
And the (primarily) Chrysler dealer body for service.

        What could go wrong?
