Between his motorsport successes and his varied creations, Carroll Shelby has no shortage of accolades. But he's about to get one more, as industry publication Automotive News announces that they'll be honoring the American motoring icon later this month at the Washington Auto Show.
At the show, Shelby will be decorated with the 2011 Keith Crain/Automotive News Lifetime Achievement Award. Previous recipients have included Ralph Nader and Congressman John Dingell (D-Mich).

Too bad it wasn't on the 11th, that was his birthday...

      Congrads anyways, Caroll!

Yeah I heard the Danbury AND Franklin Mint were fighting over the rights to that one.

        Carroll sued them both.

I might buy it, as long as it comes with the painted collector coin! ;)

I think they should give him TWO lifetime achievement awards!

        @Not THAT Matt

I think his sheet metal has been dated for a while! You might be thinking of Iacocca which looks a little younger than 90.

Only reason I'm think that you might be thinking of Iacocca is because when I saw Shelby I thought of the Mustang commercial for the Iacocca Mustang (the 2010 fastback) and thought 'wow he looks old' and then realized that I was confused!

        or not... lol

Is it just me, or has he aged terribly in the past 5-7 years?

'Carroll Shelby to get lifetime achievement award'...from the American Bar Association, for his unprecedented contribution to the art of litigation, putting the children of countless lawyers through college with his prolific legal actions...

Well deserved award for Mr. Shelby.

Yawn, this guy hasn't been relevant in decades, and even then his biggest achievement was putting the engine from one car into a different one, wow amazing.

Shame on you,Carrol has done more for Ford performance than any one alive!

Nathan, that's what I thought, too. But I just finished the book "Go Like Hell," and I now have much greater appreciation for Shelby. He raced and won at Le Mans for Aston Martin. And then ran the Ford GT40 Le Mans program that ultimately dominated there. Among many other great achievements. Before reading the book, I would have written your exact comment. But now, I'm very happy for Shelby to be receiving this award. Those who only know of Shelby from the Cobras and those damn "Z Max" commercials are really missing out!

"Carrol has done more for Ford performance than any one alive!"

Not so. Someone heard a knocking sound and took their Escort in to have it serviced. That did more for Ford performance than Shelby ever did.

I'm kidding. He's a fine fella, but don't overblow it.

I know he has meant much to the automotive industry for a few decades.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carroll_Shelby

He has proved himself a great driver competing from Hillclimbs in a Ferrari roadster to competing with in F1. It is very unfair to say all he is famous for is swapping engines, when he was forced out of racing because of a medical condition.

Truthfully at the time Carrol Shelby was the only guy with the balls to put a huge engine into a small British car and use it to kick some Italian ass.

He might have squandered his name but there is a reason his name is worth so much and highly respected.

Is he getting a lifetime achievement award for most lawsuits, or for most automotive product endorsements??

      Congrats Shelby! (see avatar)

      Nothing but cool, well deserved.

If this award was meant to be he would have received it decades ago. The guy has used his name to get prioritized for 3 heart transplant surgeries. I'm sure there was a more deserving and younger patient on the list than him.

The irony of Carroll Shelby and Ralph Nader receiving the same award...

I wish this old bag of skin would just go away. Anything HE himself did good was over 40yrs ago, and now just makes things more expensive. Ford designs the GT500, puts his name on it, and now it costs us $10k more just for his name. Bring back the Terminator days where you could get a legit SVT car for mid $30k.
