Toyota Prius versus a sheep – Click above to enlarge

The flatus of the Toyota Prius is less harmful than the flatus of a sheep. Who knew? Apparently, Toyota's Israeli arm, that's who.

As you can see from the advertisement above, the methane gas produced by livestock can indeed be worse for the environment (animal gas, including that from humans, is in fact a greenhouse gas) than the emissions from the ass end of an automobile, depending on what you're trying to define – and that goes for any automobile, not just one that's as popular in squeaky clean circles as the Prius hybrid.

We think this is a pretty funny and effective ad, though something tells us it would never see the light of day in the United States. Sadly.

      it's also a lie.
a prius is a heavy steel fossil fuel burner. it's not green in the slighest. and of course infinitely worse for the environment than the little sheep.
"I get voted down for pointing out that of course a prius is more harmful to the environment than a sheep."

No, you get voted down for being an ignorant, egotistical moron that makes wild claims whose only defense is "i stand by my statements" when he's clearly proven wrong.

        Just sayin'.
electrified light aero vehicles. not electric compacts as usual. a kei car still runs on fossil fuel and I'm not sure their fuel efficiency is even all that great. you have to understand that fossil oil is running out. not getting a bit more expensive, it's running out. no more. no future for gas cars. incrementalism is invalid. a prius is not the solution. light weight aero EV is.
We are not running out of oil. We are running out of proven reserves which is the stuff we cherry pick out of the least costly areas. Our ability to increase daily production and contain costs is in question, but not total oil reserves.

Seeing as we don't have a silver bullet to transition from oil burning cars and we don't have a replacement for oil (40% of global energy supply) waiting in the wings, it would be wise to cut demand and waste with efficient ICEs and hybrids even though they are not terribly green.
        you're a lie!!
I take Dan's remarks seriously b/c they are correct in some ways. Prius and other hybrid vehicles are not green by any stretch, but I do think they will help with our oil demand problems. I prefer K-cars and lightweight vehicles to electrified compacts, but that's just me. A Prius is far more efficient in the city, and it has better aero which helps on the highway.
of course we are running out. and of course there is a silver bullet solution. thoughtless humans are just not embracing it.
battery electric drive, lean aero, lean range extender, wind, solar, waterfall, nuclear.
synthetic fuel from water and air for vehicles and grid levelling. done. no scifi, basic science

hehe unbelievable. you guys just want the truth to go away. you want your soothing lies.
I get voted down for pointing out that of course a prius is more harmful to the environment than a sheep.
it runs on gasoline. on fossil fuel. if all the cars in the world were priuses it would not slow down global warming a bit nor get us out of the peak oil crisis so it has no future. deal with it. you sheep

"if all the cars in the world were priuses it would not slow down global warming a bit nor get us out of the peak oil crisis so it has no future. deal with it. you sheep"

      Glo-bull warming! Peak Oil!

Save yourselves! Run for your lives!

      Hysteria! Chaos! Hyperbole! Eco-greenie FUD!

Talk about sheep. You guys are pathological. Such unfounded fear mongering. The religion of global warming. All you need to do is shave your heads and chant in the park.
And since the only "news" source that is claiming Global Warming is a Hoax, is Fox Lies, then it must be true. Because there hasn't been an one part per million of truthful information out of Lies for the last two years.

You should stop watching the propaganda, if you really want to know what's going on. This is how "Republicans" lose their money.

        "The religion of global warming"
That's not even an argument, it's just a phrase to make you feel better when you're surrounded by intelligent people, scientific bodies, and international organizations who all assert the truth of something that you don't believe in for reasons you can't even articulate properly.

"Global warming" is an observed fact, go read the graphs and data at http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/ . "Global warming" is also the ONLY credible theory that explains that fact. "Global warming" is also an accurate description of the ongoing changes to climate primarily caused by human activities that according to climate models are likely to cause an additional temperature increase of 1.1 to 6.4 °C (2.0 to 11.5 °F) during the 21st century.

Based on how you're getting downvoted for the comment above, probably not.

Ah, but manufacturing a sheep produces far less carbon.

What's the difference between Mick Jagger and a Scot?

        oh dear.. i dunno
My next car won't be a sheep. For that matter, how much methane does a person emit? Perhaps a Prius is better than a human being. If so, my next car won't be a human being. Besides, their wool is quite unsatisfactory.
Oh yeah? Well it still stinks like s&*t.
Except, if the sheep eats natural grass, it is just recycling some of the carbon in the atmosphere. Prius takes millions of years old safely buried carbon and releases it to atmosphere.
No doubt, industrial farming of cows is very harmful to the ecology. Vegetarian (or better yet Vegan) diet will reduce carbon footprint quite a bit.

BTW, methane has a much lower (10 yrs) cycle than CO2 (100 yrs), even though it is more potent.
Except that methane is more than 20 times more powerful of a greenhouse gas than CO2.
Also keep in mind, there are approximately 1 billion sheep, and 1.5 billion cows. Thats a hell of a lot more than Priuses out there.
I'm more worried about the cows than the sheep.
Sheep are more likely to be open range animals, and as you said, eat grass. Not so the cows, industrial cow feeds them with grain (mostly corn) using large amounts of petroleum to produce the feed.
Because they feed cows corn, they have to cut a hole in the cows to help move along the digestion. That means they need low levels of anti-biotic. Which allows virus's to become resistant.

        Result: SARS.
        Humans Die.

Don't we become Stupid when it comes to Money?
        What's Risk Management?
        Mike!!ekiM....
Haha. Have you ever seen a cow? I love the crazy stuff PETA, etc makes up to scare the silly people. Yes, cows eat corn. No, there is no need or desire to cut holes in them to facilitate their eating of corn. That would be way more work than it would be worth. As for the antibiotic use, you should probably focus your attention more on the pork guys for that one.
Natural grass captures carbon dioxide, but the sheep emits part of that carbon as methane. Methane is about 50 to 100 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (in the short run) than carbon dioxide.

Can't find data for sheep, but apparently cows produce an average of 300 g of methane per day directly, and potentially two or three times that amount is emitted from decomposing manure (unless you take care to capture that methane, it's called biogas).

Times 50, that's the equivalent of 45 to 60 kg of CO2 per day. Prius produces 4 kg of CO2 per day if driven 15,000 miles a year.

The fuel for Prius increasingly comes from bioethanol.

Too bad it's nearly 20 years after the Saab Trionic system came out.

Back in the early 1990s, Saab's emissions system produced less harmful air than what the car might ingest.

It's still better than a regular car dude.....take what you can get right now.
As I posted in more detail in another thread, there may simply not be enough accessible cheap fossil fuel resources available to cause extensive global warming.

So the sheep may be getting a bum rap!
Who said anything about Fox News? Where do you get your news from? HuffPost? MSNBC?

      Lies! Lies!

      LOL

You guys ought to get with PETA and protest together. Dress up in sheep costumes and pour motor oil all over yourselves. Pathetic moonbats...
