Chevrolet Cruze hatchback design drawings – Click above for high-res image gallery

Most cars never look quite as cool as their conceptual and pre-production versions, and it would appear that the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback will be no exception. Carscoop was able to get its hands on design drawings of the car used for trademark filings with the European patent office.

The good news is that the Cruze hatchback manages to stay fairly faithful to the version shown off at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The predictable bad news is that the front fascia looks less aggressive and ditches the LED light strips for standard fog lamps. What's more, the wheels will be smaller than the oversized auto show setup seen in Paris, and the rear taillamps will most likely be toned down a notch. The design and the show car are actually very similar looking. However, you can't have the sweet without the sour, so the really bad news is that the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback has not been greenlit for U.S. roads.

Why was this design submitted for a trademark anyway? Usually a trademark implies something unique; from what I can see, there is nothing unique about the design of the Cruze hatchback. As a matter of fact, it's quite ordinary looking. Attractive, but ordinary. It actually looks quite similar to my 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer ES with the only difference being that the Cruze is a hatchback. That's just fine by me because I much prefer having a trunk, anyway. Just wonder if the Cruze is as good a car as my Lancer is. That's what's more important.

Overall this would be a great VW Golf/Ford Focus competitor in the states. I do have to nit pick... Although the car is well resolved and detailed, the new rear's style is not consistent with the front. The determined and aggressive stance of the front, wraps into softer and passive lines in the rear. That being said, it's still better than the sedan's cheap looking tail end.

Actually, I find the rear more aggressive than the front. Interesting.

Hard to buy a Hatchback when the US Automakers REFUSE to sell them. If Chevy brought it here, I would buy it. As of now, I am waiting for the Focus.

      Hello Malibu Maxx
GM would be smart to follow Ford's lead in bringing a small hatch to the states. Ford has both the fiesta and the 2012 focus in hatch offerings, chevrolet should do the same.

Yes The Maxx was ugly, but I would have bought the current Malibu as a wagon, --& told the salesman so, 3 yrs ago. Don,t understand tiny trunk openings.

This is what passes for "cool" in 2011? Wow, we certainly have become a limp wristed society. "Where have you gone Little GTO, our Nation turns it's lonely eyes to you!"

There!, You got your hatch, now quit your whining. You know who you are.
