BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

We have heard that BMW has has registered a series of "i+number trademarks (i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8 and i9) to use for its fuel efficient MegaCity range of vehicles. BMWBlog is now saying that it has heard a rumor that the combination that will be applied to the upcoming (read: 2013 or 2014) version of the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept will be i8. This makes some sense, as a BMW i8 would conjure up images of the never-seen M8 supercar, but BMWBlog is unconvinced. After all, why bring back memories of gas-guzzling supercars when you're trying to reinvent what one can be? Plus, since the vehicle is so far away, there's probably no name set in stone yet anyway.

Whatever BMW decides on, it'll be better than the name that the car was given when we first saw it at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009. Vision EfficientDynamics is just way, way too long.

i8 4 jelly donuts for breakfast and now I wanna hurl. The production car won't look much like that except for maybe the silhouette.
The production model would obviously have quite a few differences (like solid doors for safety regs).

I dont want to pass judgment till I see what they actually come up with for production.

they don't match the power of a hyundai i10 though...

Needs the M3 v8 as a option for the folks who do not agree with the green hype.

It'll look nothing like the concept. Plus all that rubbish about this car being in every car they have built that we hear in the adverts.

Anyway because im bored i'll make a crap joke.

      i8 a pizza for dinner.

I knew someone had to have beat me to the "I ate" punch.

Once you get past the fact that it's a BMW it isn't all that bad looking. Thank goodness Bangle isn't still at BMW; this thing could have been hideous!!

      i8 that name very much.

Who cares about a name ..lets hope the technology makes its way down the model line
and will become more reasonably priced ..
It will be interesting to see the competition for the ultimate efficient car
that still drives like a car ..How long does it take GM and others to adopt the technology to the Volt ? IMO I see this technology becoming adaptable than the pure electric

I wonder if the heat from the exhaust turbosteamer concept will make it
though that looks to be going the way of an add on

      "BMW?"

"Hi, my name is Steve. I'm calling from Cupertino, CA."

"I'm calling about your intent to register and trademark products beginning with a lower i."

" Yeah, um, we sorta own all of those already."

      "Buy them? From us?"

"Uh no, but we can have our attorneys call you to discuss what will happen if you proceed."

      "Have a nice day :)"

      Horrible rumor... not gonna happen.

All this "i" stuff needs to go away.

I always liked the relatively wild styling of this concept, I hope they can keep as much as possible in the production version. As for the hybrid drivetrain, if it can deliver the performance it was supposedly capable of, that'd be great. It's not the mechanically simple car I wish BMW would make again someday, but if it can still deliver an engaging experience while maintaining the high efficiency the concept promises, it'll still be a success in my eyes.

I believe they are... On the dontblogaboutthis.com blog thing, they had a production version or something... Most of the car is kept the same.

It loses the odd blue lights everywhere, and the bottom half of the door is blackened, barely transparent. At an angle it looks solid.

Other than these few differences, it looks exactly the same. (At least, in it's camouflaged appearance.)

        :D
