Lotus Renault F1 – Click above for high-res image gallery

We can quit wondering where the Chapman family stands on the whole Lotus F1 debacle. Colin Chapman's son, Clive, has announced that he and the rest of his clan are firmly behind Group Lotus, which has just announced a merger with Renault F1. The two will campaign under the Lotus Renault GP Team next season. In a statement, Clive Chapman said that Group Lotus is the true successor of the racing team that Colin and Hazel Chapman created way back when. That sound? That's Team Lotus quietly sobbing in the corner.

Team Lotus has laid claim to the rights to the Lotus racing name thanks to a deal with David Hunt. Hunt held the rights to the moniker and sold them to the race team that competed in the 2010 F1 season, so there's a bit of a dustup over who exactly should be able to compete under the Lotus flag. While there appears to be no resolution on the horizon any time soon, at least we know where the Chapmans themselves stand.

i'm still not sure why tony fernandes is so adamant about using the lotus name. the money he's spending on a legal battle with proton would be better spent on the 2011 car. the supporters of 1malaysia racing would probably like good results more than being allowed to race as "team lotus".

Someone needs to change it to Team Grasshopper and be done with the noise.

so its a fake Lotus team on top of that it's Renault engine etc etc...So team Lotus is just a commercial so to speak in F1 since nothing is purely Lotus..

The whole fake Lotus battle is bloody stupid. The original Team Lotus ended in 1994. What's next, a new fake Brabham?
Well, that kind of happened.. but not in F1. Remember that Brabham Racing BT92 widebody M3?

I certainly hope to see this livery on the grid next year. I was a big fan of the John Player Specials driven by Mario back in the day.

Even though it's a proper name, when I see the plural word "Chapmans" my mind instinctively says "shouldn't that be 'Chapmen'?"...
