2010 Acura TL SH-AWD – Click above for high-res image gallery

It's no secret that the corporate schnoz adopted in recent years by Acura is, shall we say... controversial. But whether or not it's helping or hurting sales is up for debate. On one hand, the brand's 24-percent increase in sales in 2010 over the previous year has Honda's luxury division outpacing the gains of its rivals. On the other hand, nearly everyone's 2009 sales figures went down the economic toilet, and J.D. Power reports that exterior styling is the number one reason new car shoppers are rejecting the marque, followed closely by Acura's interior styling.

Perhaps tellingly, Acura's two most successful models in sales gains are the MDX and RDX utility vehicles, models competing in burgeoning segments (and the former of which features a somewhat muted faces compared to the rest of the company's lineup). But hope may be on the way, and soon. According to Automotive News, Dave Conant, who owns an Acura store in Mission Viejo, California and has gotten an early look at the next-gen TL, Acura's middle child is getting a major nose job.

And more new models are reportedly on the horizon as well, including hybrids and a likely return to the entry-level compact luxury class. What's more, the automaker has promised dealers that future models will be better differentiated from one another, both styling-wise and in size. All that sounds good, just so long as no giant polished cow-catcher grilles get in the way.

      Is Acura dumb?
People said the styling was bad, they still made them ugly.
People said they want V-8s and RWD, they refuse to make
People want a new NSX, they make it AWD/Front engine then cancel

Maybe fanbois are dumb, as they must be the only ones buying these ugly, slow cars that are behind HYUNDAI and KIA now.

Very pleased with my 2010 MDX. Incredibly comfortable, performance is great and thoroughly enjoy the tech package. Really enjoy the ELS sound system and other tech features. Comfort and driving enjoyment outweigh any reservations I may have about the beak.

Honda, Toyota and Nissan just don't "get it". Go Hyundai and Kia!!!
Meh, Nissan makes the GT-R and the 370Z, I think we can let them slide for now

If you paint that grille (and car) in black then the car actually looks good.
If you replace the beak with a normal grille, it looks even better.

Most all of Honda & Acura's car styling is mediocre at best. None of if really inspires me to try to buy one of their cars over one from a competitor.

      Obvious report is obvious.

I 100% agree with this as the reason why no one is buying Acura products.
I have had a few Acura products over the years including a Legend and a TL , 03 I think and that was a great looking car.
Even most of the girls I know thought it looked better than my S class and actually chastised me for getting rid of it.
Now, you could not get me to go near an Acura vehicle.
They are just hideous looking now.

Even Hondas do not look as good they did before. They used to make really great looking cars. I had a 95 Accord coupe way back and to this day I think that was one of the best looking cars, and the Prelude was good looking also.

Somewhere along the road, Toyota and Honda lost their way.

We're at a low point for car styling in general. BMW may have finally bottomed out. Their cheap- and dated-looking creased designs seem finally to be receding. The ridiculous plastic "ground effects"... just incredible for a brand that wants to be high-end.

Just about everything else is hideous.

Acura front end was inspired by an elephant seal:

Acuras are superb cars with one of the best service records.

One annoyance is that all Acuras require premium gas.
The extra power isn't worth it.

They might be ugly (TL), but its a damned GOOD driving Vehicle!!!!

"Look Dad, it's the SMILEY face car!"

Hear it all the time when we drive by one. And it's not just the front, but the back too.

Mazda's are the "fish mouth" cars to him.

Personally, I tend to agree with some of the other posters that Acura's are a chrome strip or two away from wearing giant Transformer logos.

In other news, tires are round. water's wet, planes fly, and babies cry.
I think you've hit on the problem. If Acura would just change their logo to the Decepticon symbol their line of F117 wannabes would sell.

If this is the smiley car, what does your kid say when s/he sees a late-model Mazda3?
its definitely an acquired taste, cmon Honda, you guys can do better than that
