Fiat 500 Art Basel art cars – click above for high-res image gallery

We wouldn't have taken something like the Art Basel festival in Miami Beach as a typical showcase for automobiles, but after Tesla rolled out its art car and Maybach spearheaded its sculpture initiative there, Fiat became the third automaker to strut its stuff at the festival among the 2,000 artists from around the world.

Fiat's display took place at the four-day Exhibitalia event, where several renowned artists and two student teams from the University of Miami used its tiny 500 as their "inspiration and canvas" in the creation of their works. Some created pieces inspired by the Cinquecento, some used body panels, and one even used the entire vehicle, transforming it into an art car on par with anything BMW could throw at it. Check it out in the gallery below and the press release after the jump.

Where can I get an art car? Seriously, this is awesome. How long does it take to make one? They should have a competition.

This is a great use of Fiat cars, since their cars are (beep) and next to worthless as vehicles.
      Remember the Yugo?
      It was a Fiat.

Personally, this is a useless article and a waste of good electrons.

It'd have to be Lambo since Ferrari is part of the family.

      Art cars are stupid !!

Government gives tax payer money for these crack heads to paint a car that looks like a 3 year old painted it !!!

Thenwhen these so-called artists dont get any taxpayer money they go out and vandalize the city, wearing black head gear..We all have seen these dolts at some rallye,or political event in the world, these so-called artists should be locked up and then i would have no problem for them to be painting their new cell walls or their cell mates bottom !!

I never understood this art car fad. Some cars are already a work of and covering them in paint is like painting over the Mona Lisa. Why?

BMW have always done some amazing paint jobs on their race cars like the 1970's CSL and 2002 Turbo. Try this site - bmwdrives.com - and search BMW Artwork, some are better than others.

' Al Terego ' makes a very valid point some cars are already a work of art, S1 Jag XKE, Miura, Dino 246, 308 GTS etc and some cars have even featured in the Louvre Paris like the original Range Rover.

FIAT keeps imitating MINI. First the offset roof coloring of the 500 and now 500 art cars. Next FIAT is going to "challenge" Ferrari to an autoX event at Monza.

They should just let us test drive instead of promoting these art crap.
