What do you call a gullwing without the gullwing doors? A roadster, of course, and according to the latest reports, that's precisely what Mercedes-Benz has in store for us at the Frankfurt Motor Show next year.

The reports stem from an interview given by AMG boss Ola Kallenius in Auto Motor und Sport, outlining what the Silver Star performance studio has in the pipeline. Among them is the long-anticipated convertible version of the Benz SLS AMG supercar, which will come as a welcome improvement for many.

The upward lifting doors on the SLS coupe may be the car's party piece, but not everyone has fallen in love with them – the roadster will offer the same retrotastic styling and the same 560-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 engine, plus the wind-in-your-hair factor and sans the showy portals.

A prototype of the SLS droptop has just been spotted undergoing winter testing, and this is the first time we can recall seeing the canvas roof unadorned by camouflage, giving us a better look at what the finished car will look like. Check out out in our high-res gallery below.

        Convertible looks better

I never like the look of this car. I know this car is going to be a classic and the design will grow in time but seriously it does not look good as of now.

That and I'd bet the Viper would have looked better. Go back to the drawing board all of the McLauren collab designs were amazing.

I saw the SLS yesterday driving around for the first time, man is it a head turner. Not the most beautiful car, but you can definitely tell that it's something special. It's understated, yet it is a very nice design. Well excuted Mercedes.

I do believe that it is a bit overpriced. They should have brought out a smaller engine version for around $150,000 to challenge the Porsche 911 Turbo, Maserati Grand Turismo, and Aston Martin V8 Vantage shoppers. All we need is 420 hp to get into that category.

        You'll never find a 911 Turbo for $150k. They're usually optioned closer to $170k.
Just like a base 911 might be $78k, but the lowest my local dealership offers is close to $90k.

So, why not the scissors-style doors from the 300SLR roadster? Or the butterfly doors from the SLR McLaren?

I see it in the snow. And I cringe.

Normally, thoughts of cringing refers to something bad. But this cringe is more related to a feeling.. a feeling of sudden warmth. Beauty in my eyes - something I can't turn away from.

      I look. I peer. I dream.

Black. With a tan top. And a bordeaux brown and black interior.

In the snow. On the way down from the cold, slushy Toronto, to the vibrant, sun filled Florida. I can drive from here, to there, with nothing more then a smile.

      I smile.

The snow suddenly seems to fit right in.

And with this one you can get in when you have a tight parking space.

The gullwing doors open using less space than conventional doors.
That kind of just looks boring. Plus, I hate the brown roof :P

my friend has one, it's freaking amazing

wow this is seriously stunning. i love the coupe, but this thing actually improves the lines. although the more upright/steeper sloped back window on the gullwing is gorgeous in its own way.

i'm stunned that mercedes built a sports car this good. i'd love one.

Very nice, I think I actually like it better as a convertible.
Man, this looks good! I normally dispise all things convertible, but this is different. Notmally the convertible version always has an awkward looking top, that even as a hard convertible, looks awkward and never really matches the sexy lines of their stationary-top counterparts...

This however looks as good, if not better, than the Gullwing top does from ever angle shown in these pictures! The cloth top just flows SO nicely between top of the windscreen and the top of the boot lid. Excellent job!
