Ken Block Invitational Gymkhana Grid - Click above for image gallery

When the smoke cleared this weekend at the inaugural Ken Block Invitational Gymkhana Grid event at Toyota's Irwindale Speedway, Tanner Foust had claimed the top spot. The head-to-head event, which had drivers like Foust, Vaughn Gittin Jr., Andrew Comrie-Picard and host Ken Block cording brand-new tires in a matter of minutes, pitted powertrains (AWD or RWD) in the same brackets to keep things interesting. After several rounds of eliminations, it came down to just Foust and Block for the final – both drivers in similar 550 horsepower AWD Ford Fiestas. In the best-of-three sprints, Block ran nearly flawlessly, but Foust demonstrated inhuman levels of car control (720-degree spins just inches from a barrel) to take the first two races and the resulting overall win.

On a related side note: Earlier in the evening, Michael Essa, driving GSR Autosport's 350R (a BMW V10-powered 3 Series), topped Vaughn Gittin to take the win at the Discount Tire burn-out contest. While other drivers spent their three minutes doing spins around the course, Essa simply cranked his steering wheel to the left and bounced off the rev-limiter (in third gear) until he disappeared into a thick gray cloud – liquidating his Nitto tires in 90 seconds of carnage.

Hit the jump to watch the complete battle between Block and Foust.

Isn't he one of the guys on that really bad History Channel TV show that sorta resembles that really good BBC TV show?

While Tanner may have "pissed on Ken's couch" this announcer has totally pissed all over this event. Horrible, just horrible!
Lol beaten at his own game! It was by Tanner Foust though, who is no beginner behind the wheel, let alone drifting. I guess that maybe this will push Block to step his game up for his next "Invitational"

        @trustedcarsalesman

Please research or you'll look like an idiot...like your current post.

Tanner Foust DOES race in Rally America. He took home a win at the very first Rally America Rally Cross. He also has a championship in Formula D. TV hosting is the only thing he does.

Also, it was Block's rookie season. Kimi, an F1 world champion, didn't get one win either. But, respectively, they both, the majority of the season, never finished last. The times they did was either because of a wreck or mechanical problems.

Elmo, you're the one looking like an idiot. The difference between Rally America and WRC is like saying I am the US karting champion so I should be able to race F1. I can't think of any other motorsport where the gap between a national and international series is larger.
It looks like they should switch carreers, because Ken hasn't won anything in WRC, and Tanner's TV hosting skills are almost as bad as the MC in this video...

Hey TexRob, could you possibly show me where I am comparing the 2 sports?

lol this coming from the guy who thinks the Hennessey Venom GT is a stretched Lotus because of it's similar design to the Elise.

Block just can't catch a break these days.
Doing well in WRC? Are you high? Does he even have a finish yet? There are plenty of rookies that did better in their first outing than he has done all year. And now he can't even win at his own event. Which was obviously my point. I guess money can't buy everything.

        Read the WHOLE comment...

I said "do as well as he did". He DID finish. He and Kimi consistently finished in the top 10. When they didn't, it was either because they wrecked (bad navigating) or mechanical failures.

I should of known you wouldn't research. First you deny that the Scion tC can't compete in Formula D because it isn't based on an AWD platform, now this.

amazing how they messed up the car models in both driver's presentations...

HOW many times can you misspell Ford Fiesta?
      Festiva
      Festia
      ...
Agree. Beaten at his own game +in his own car +at his selfcreated track lol this is just soooooo embarrassing.

She should come to Europe and drive against Röhrl and Loeb..... ;)
        He!
        -> typo of no significance...
Yes it's not that embarrassing getting beaten by another good driver, it was obviously just a fun event. We all know that Loeb is a driving god so don't even mention him :)

What is embarrassing though is wearing that awful flat brim caps and that Block's suit look like prison pajamas. I just don't get the fashion...
...it's not really that embarrassing. Ken has never said he's the best driver in the world, he created the event and the track so that he and all of the other drivers at the event could have fun and put on a show, and they did. Now he knows what he can work on, and can use the event to further work on his driving. Sounds like a success rather than a failure to me...

        Am I missing your sarcasm?

Walter Rohrl doesn't drive competitvely anymore, and Block did compete against Loeb in the 2010 WRC? I'll agree Ken didn't set the world afire with his results, but to not run dead last in a rookie season at that level or competition, is not too shabby.
I don't know who that track announcer is, but he needs to think about a different line of work. :-)
        Perhaps the ex-voice of Gymkhana?

      "Must win"
"Ken Block, Tanner Foust... Ken Block, Tanner Foust... Tanner Foust, Ken Block... Tanner Foust..."

Wanna finish a thought there, big guy?

Loved this event...I streamed it online, and while the commentary was a little weak, I still enjoyed watching the action. Would be sweet to have an event in the Midwest so I could go see it live!

I hope Ken continues to expand the series, because it is very entertaining to watch...ESPN or SPEED should definitely pick it up.
