Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Edition – Click above for high-res image gallery

It's been a year since the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was discontinued. 2,000 examples of five different variants of the extravagant supercar were made over the course of five years of production. And in its wake, Mercedes-Benz and McLaren have gone their separate ways, both on the track and off. Both have been keeping plenty busy since the divorce, but they've apparently gotten back together for one last hurrah.

Apparently created by McLaren as an aftermarket kit for existing models and unveiled at the Essen Motor Show (think of it as Germany's SEMA), this McLaren Edition SLR packs revised aerodyanamics, steering, suspension and interior. The result is an exclusive swan-song for the exotic McMerc (only 25 examples will be offered), and it looks like it's mated with a MG SV. Take a closer look with the images below and the video after the jump, where you may notice that the Mercedes part of the equation has been decidedly de-emphasized.

If I'd find this in a happymeal I wouldn't be complaining!

Holy crap, how many versions of the SLR has there been? Can't even keep up anymore.

SLR, SLR Roadster, SLR 722, SLR 722 roadster, that Stirling Moss edition, this one

There has to be 4 or 5 more that I'm forgetting.

I love the SLR, one of my favorite cars ever.
      That car just has presence.

I saw an SLR on the road the other day. I sped up beside it, which the driver apparently took as a challenge to race. Getting the hear that V8 roar made getting embarrassed in my 16 year old 900 worth it.

I was about to correct you and tell you the SLR has a V12 but I would have been wrong. This whole time I thought the SLR had a V12, what the hell!

Smart move(!) . . . 'cause the McLaren is a hell of lot better looking car than the new gullwing.

      Nice!

Whatever happened to the planned Sterling Moss edition?
I wish McLaren never put their name on this thing. It's tragic.
As far as looks, I'd take the SLR over the new Gullwing any day.

zamafir, yes, I've seen both in person. I really dislike the SLR styling. The proportions are just all wrong. I haven't seen the SLR Sterling Moss in person, but, frankly, the proportions are still the same -- all wrong IMHO.
@Jared - have you seen them both in person? more importantly, have you seen the slr stirling moss? I can't think of a more gorgeous modern three pointed star wearing car.
Maybe it's just because the car is so hulking, but the rims look a little dinky.
