DIY Racing Cockpit Ottoman – Click above for high-res image gallery

Two things have prevented us from installing a full-blown racing-wheel, pedals and seat in our living room for the likes of Gran Turismo 5 – the aggravation of having the hardware soak up space in the living room and the threat of endangering hard-earned household peace accords for such a folly. One enterprising soul over at OverClockers has come up with the perfect solution by genetically splicing attractive furniture and functional gaming hardware into one vastly superior being. Using a little MDF and some excellent upholstery work, user Lyshco has managed to create a racing cockpit that's a little larger than your run-of-the-mill F1 throne, and he's done so without shelling out nearly $7,000 for a convertible coffee table.

The trick is that the whole kit-and-caboodle folds up into a very attractive ottoman when not in use, saving everyone's eyes from having to suffer through staring at the evidence of our dweeby past time. It turns out that old gem about necessity's momma turns out to be true. Thanks for the tip, Bloop!

      Better than my setup. I've since then upgraded to a 42'' HDTV and a new stand, but it still works well to this day. I want that guy's setup though.

      Very Nice,

      And here I thought I was doing well when I got wife canceling, oooops, I mean noise canceling earbuds.

      Very cool, just move the gear shifter to the right for North America!

      I have never used a steering wheel set up on a racing game. Do they work well? Response time good? I had no idea they sold wheel, pedal, and gearboxes packages for home use. Anyways this is a cool idea if it gave an authentic sim feel.

        You can tell who the serial thumbstickers are (I'm one of them) in multiplayer from the way the cars' front wheels are constantly jittering back and forth. This compounds lag issues, your opponents will see your car jumping all over the place. But in F3 tag (virus), it's actually ends up being an unfair advantage.

      That's brilliant!

        @ Sea Urchin. That actually explains a lot...

        Think I might try this out for myself!

        @Sea Urchin How old are you? O_o I still prefer to do my laundry and cook than to live with my parents. When was the last time if any that you had a girl?
        • 4 Years Ago
        @Sea Urchin Really? Am I the sucker because I don't live with my parents? That's a new one XD

        I've seen many bizarre things on the net, but a virgin calling everyone else losers an boasting about being an unti-social virgin... that's new.

        @Sea Urchin,

        So are you saying that Mom still wipes your bottom or are you all growns up enough to wear disposable training pants now?

        @James Sonne,
        I'm sure it's easy enough to design it in LHD, for the people who drive on the correct side of the street ;)

        Sea Urchin is definitely the superior being if you took what he said literally.

        But it's RHD! :-P

      This is very cool specially the reverse mounted pedals. I have a Wheel Stand Pro Deluxe for my G25 and that thing is awesome and pretty portable. Just as long as you have the closet space for it or even fit it inside one of these maybe.

      I bet if AB opened the topic up to submissions, they would find a ton of cheap, DIY setups. Compiling all of them in one post would be very informative to all of us that follow...I'm curious as to how many people actually have a decent setup.

      How about it, Autoblog?

      Necessity doesn't have a momma in that old gem. It's the momma of invention. : )

      I leave mine right out in the middle of the living room. I'll push it to the side when I have company, but its there for all to see. Basically, whomever don't like it can gtfo!!!

      These are portable enough to move around and off to the side so that they are not in the way. As long as the wires are wrapped properly, its not an eyesore at all.

      For those who have "peace accord" issues involving equipment like this.....well.....it really sucks to be you.

      Absolutely brilliant!!!

      I want one
