Citroën DS3 – Click above for high-res image gallery

As we said before, it's that time when everyone starts rolling out their year-end "Best of" lists and revisits their favorite rides of 2010. Top Gear is in on the action, naming its annual award winners. Its list, as you can see, is diverse and loaded with forbidden fruit (at least for those of us in the U.S.)
  • Hypercar of the Year: Koenigsegg Agera
  • Cabrio of the Year: Maserati GranCabrio
  • Grand Tourer of the Year: Bentley Continental GT
  • Hot Hatch of the Year: Volkswagen Golf R
  • Family Car of the Year: BMW 520d Touring
  • Engine of the Year: Fiat TwinAir
  • Coupe of the Year: Peugot RCZ
  • Luxury Car of the Year: Jaguar XJ
  • Small Car of the Year and Car of the Year: Citroen DS3
Besides the standard categories, the three hosts also picked their favorites of 2010. Jeremy Clarkson is in love with the Pagani Zonda R, James May goes with the Bugatti Veyron Supersport and Richard Hammond is quite fond of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Though we've given you the list, it's still worth a trip over to the Top Gear website to read the reasons behind each choice.

So basically a bunch of cars that no one but the super wealthy can afford.
Golf R and Megane RS are the equivalents in Europe to a Mustang or a Camaro in the US; affordable performance for the limited-budget enthusiast. Not elitist at all.
actually you can see a lot of rczs and golf rs (and comparable toys like the megane tce250 or leon cupra r) on the streets here in germany. never had the feeling that those are rich people cars but affordable afficinado cars.
        Yes...you nailed it

Hot Hatch of the Year: Volkswagen Golf R
Family Car of the Year: BMW 520d Touring
Engine of the Year: Fiat TwinAir>>>in entry level Fiat 500
Coupe of the Year: Peugot RCZ
Hypercar of the Year and stuff like that tend to be kind of expensive....
Peugot RCZ is great for the money and i could have easily found much more expensive coupes out there, neither do i consider BMW 520d Touring expensive. Citroen DS3 is not the cheapest, but still by no means too expensive.

I do give you that Volkswagen Golf R is not the cheapest you will find in that category.
Because Top Gear has always been about practical, affordable cars....
I think they have it fairly well sorted. It makes sense at least.
Yay! My car is the hot hatch of the year!!!

Couldn't agree more, especially after having driven every hot hatch available today. The Golf R can do everything.
Wow - even topgear gives a nod to the fiat twinair.

I hope we get this little wunderkind here in the states sooner rather than later.
I think it's an inline two, not a flat two as in the original.
It's a flat two, only positioned up-down instead of right-left, for packaging. It has also been tuned to sound like the original 500 twin, so it's got plenty of personality (if you're into BMW flat-twins, for example).
Mileage is simply amazing, at 57mpg on the Euro circuit, but it might be a little underpowered or simply too weird (What, only two cylinders!!) for the US market.
It's an in-line twin, like the original - but nothing like it.

The Citroen 2CV, VW Beetle and its Porsche derivatives were flat twins. Also Subarus.
        ha! yes, 'f i a t'.
It all went right over my head that the comments about it being flat or not were a direct response to me. I thought it was just added points of interest.

the original comment said FIAT twinair, not FLAT twinair.

Otherwise, yes its an inline-2... because, well the the cylinders are in line
      • 4 Years Ago
Nice list. They have chosen some real good cars.
Doubt it. Top Gear is ruthless about critiquing cars, and they trash everyone just about, unlike US mags and TV auto programs that are overly concerned about being PC and losing sponsors.. From what I've read in other international journals, the DS3 is a cracking hatch and deserves the accolades.
Wow, I know very few about those cars on the list. One thing is for sure, XJ shouldn't be on there. I missed the old design and the interior isn't as attractive as the Infiniti M. The automatic wheel is pretty neat though. Please don't kill the next generation XK. That's all I asked, well and maybe be as good looking/sexy as the Aston Martin Vantage.
I respect what you say because one cannot argue over taste. They are always going to be different. I must say however, that I'm in different crowd which likes the new XJ way more. I've seen them on the road and each time it looks like a slow-motion commercial of just pure sex.

Previous generation surely had its fans who remained loyal. But purists of "good old days" are way harder to please and there are much fewer of them these days.

        It's just like with anything

        Techno purists vs. Trance music
Old Lotus vs New Lotus approach (btw Jalopnik were so unprofessional and biased)
        Old XJ vs new XJ.

Excellent list, I agree with most of it.
      That's a good looking list.
Had the pleasure to test a scirocco r (almost the same as the golf r but no awd)
i must say this is a totally agreeable choice in the hot hatch category. really amazing what a car with a 2.0 turbo engine can do nowadays without sacrificing the factory warranty
      • 4 Years Ago
      M7...twinair 875cc,85hp,no vibration,low emition CO2, 25km/l ,nice sound,175km/h,what you know about machanic
      • 4 Years Ago
I have don't see too many Citroen DS3 around here yet, but it looks even better in real life and at least reviews over here have been very positive.
Citroen here in Finland got hitted hard by the last gen C5 that was in bottom of all reliability lists in here and many companies including the one i work for denied the possibility of Citroen being taken as company/leased car but Citroen seem to be getting up again.
French and Italian cars don't do well in Scandinavia/Nordic countries in general...

They don't sell well, and don't drive as well during winter. They lose a lot more of the second-hand value than the competitors. It's measurable, not a an opinion.

I personally have nothing against French cars or France ;)
