McLaren MP4-12C GT3 spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

Grainy as they may be, these spy photos give us our first glimpse at the race-prepped McLaren MP4-12C GT3 – a high-performance version of the automaker's stunning new two-door. The GT3 aims to recapture the racing success of the original McLaren F1, and though details are slim on power enhancements, the revised visual cues of this prototype show that this MP4 is ready to do serious battle out on the track.

Up front, the road-going MP4's front air intakes have been closed off and a large air duct is now found right in the center of the hood. These changes are matched with revised rear window venting, as well as a giant wing fixed to the car's rump.

Early reports have stated that McLaren is working with British racing firm CRS and that the car is set to debut sometime in 2012. All we know is, we can't wait to see this stunning new beast swapping paint with other GT3 racers. See the full set of spy shots in the high-res gallery, below.

UPDATED with better images.

DUDE, front spoilers are HUGE.. I figured McLaren would've done better wind-tunnel testing than that. Are we sure it's not testing for the next bond flick, and those just pop out and shoot something? lol

There should be a law/rule drafted that says you can't hang extra aero devices off a production car or a race car. It would racing more interesting and cars a hell of a lot better looking!

all the aero bits just add to the awesomeness of racers!

*Crosses fingers for middle driving position and new proper name
        • 4 Years Ago
The driving position is clearly visible in the photos.

I do agree on the name issue, however.

its not a F1... and yea it would be easier without the MP4 in front.

What is with that front spoiler ? Or is it a front wing ? Winglets ? WHAT ARE THOSE THINGS ?

In some shots they are visibly sticking out just above the front quarter panel over the left and right front wheels and in other shots they disappear - is this part of an 'active aero kit' like the air-brake / rear wing on the original MP4-12C ?

The front spoilers are there because they're probably trying out 2 aero packages to see which one works. But I'm gonna say that they aren't FIA approved because they stick out and would cause a lot of problems in close-quarters racing.

but hey... no offense, that baby rocks
"KITT! SuperPursuit Mode NOW!" was my first take on it.

        Not just you.

Hey! Thats my dining room table on the back of that car!

But seriously I'm liking this a lot. For it to require so much downforce, it must be crazy fast.

      That wing is huge

I am seriously liking the front flaps. I'm surprised I like them, but I definitely do. gotta keep those front tires down somehow.

Holy Jesus, that model name is more complicated than my password.

It looks great.....and nearly identical to every other automobile of it's caliber and purpose. Again, there are only so many ways you can build a machine using the same criteria and design cues........if you know what I mean.
Well at least they've made a high-performance version...
I hope you're being sarcastic. Because I don't see how a 600hp 2,900lb car that does 0-60 in under 3.5s cannot be high performance.

I swear to god that looks like an NSX...
A modern interpretation of a NSX, maybe.
