The Fiat 500 Abarth prefers to run on two wheels – Click above to watch video after the jump

The other day we told you to bone up on your Italian because the Fiat 500 configurator came online. Now you should seriously start saving your Lira because the high-performance 500 Abarth model has been confirmed for the U.S. market. No date has been confirmed, but we've been told that the launch of all 500 models will be staggered and the Abarth is last in the queue.

Those other variations include the standard 500 that you can start ordering now, the 500C drop-top and a 500 that runs on all-electric battery power. Still, the one we're breaking out the driving gloves for is the Fiat 500 Abarth... and rumor has it that we might see the tiny terror running Stateside within the next three years because the 500 BEV hits the market in 2012.

Check out the video after the jump to see why i nostri cuori battono così velocemente.

Good news for sure, but the question I want to know the answer to is: Will we be getting the hotted-up Esseesse version as well, or "just" the standard Abarth?

Abarth is cool...but i'd rather pay for the GTI...it'll probably be in the same price range

      awesome!!

I'd buy both the Abarth and BEV. Abarth is fast petrol...BEV is fast electric...racing and city driving. Yes ma'am.

If this is coming in 2013, won't it be pretty dated by then? It's been in Europe for some time now, and that seems like a long time to delay the halo version of the 500.

Probably about 80% of future American 500 owners have just seen the car for the first time in the past couple weeks.

I know of several people who are chomping at the bit for an Abarth to arrive in the US. Boo for not bringing one in w/ the rest of the 500s.

2013? That's pretty old for a car that came out in 2007 isn't it? why don't they sell the abarth first? It seems like it would be a lot easier to make and would have a larger appeal.

I think the challenger SRT8 is an example of what ZMatt is talking about. They came out with the SRT8 a full model year before the SE and R/T versions, and due to demand to be the first people were willing to pay the high premiums. I believe this would have also been true if the abarth 500 was available before the more common versions.

That would be like making a SRT8 Challenger your base entry level car! That would not make sense for Fiat!

Some people won't be able to wait, and will buy a base 500 now and an Abarth in a few years when it comes out. I wish I could do that.
