Akio Toyoda, the man who not so long ago took over as head of the family automobile business – a little outfit by the name of Toyota – is now the latest proud owner of a Tesla Roadster Sport 2.5. The generous gift was presented to the family scion (see what we did right there) on the occasion of the opening of Tesla Motors Tokyo store by none other than CEO Elon Musk himself.
Now, the more cynical among you might see this act of largesse as one of reciprocity. Yes, Toyota did invest $50 million in Tesla stock and helped get the electric vehicle start-up a pretty good deal on the NUMMI factory in California. And yes, Tesla does have a $60 million deal to supply components for Toyota RAV4 EVs. However, we prefer to see it simply as a friendly gesture one might make towards one's peers. You know, like buying a colleague a drink at the bar or something.
