The updated A8 is already here and the new A7 is on its way, but could a new Audi super sedan be just around the corner? Folks in the homeland of the four-ringed automaker are speculating that a Porsche Panamera-derived range topper is on the horizon, and that it will be dubbed the Audi A9.
According to Germany's AutoZeitung, the A9 will be offered with a choice of either rear-wheel drive(!) or the familiar Quattro all-wheel drive setup, the Audi A9 would also be available as a gas-electric hybrid. The power output could climb to 500 horsepower.

This is all just rumor at this point, but it would certainly be interesting to if the surging Audi brand can successfully float this many high-dollar products. We've seen what it can do with the premium luxury sedan thanks to the wonderful new A8, and we're we're big fans of the R8 in all its flavors, but is there enough room at the top for an A9 as well? Check out the complete rendered image at AutoZeitung and then have your say in 'Comments.'

Another boring iteration from a car company with poor quality and reliability ratings.

      Hooray!

        Weeee, let's create news!
I was sleeping, then basically it started raining. Your mom is a quarterback, this car will have a suicide-door and I LOVE bacon.

The rendering blows and it's Friday.

Same group as BMW and Mercedes and people buy them buy the boat load.... Sooo.....

That is such a lame comment. They obviously know what they are doing, their sales numbers certainly don’t support your infantile blabber.

      That front end is gorgeous!
Should be on the existing A8

But what is with those huge ugly side mirrors???
I second the front end comment

but side view all I'm seeing is an Infiniti M with the A7 c-pillar slapped on there
      • 4 Years Ago
I thought the A7 was the Audi version of the Panamera? Still, I say as long as there's a diesel, BRING IT!!!
I hope it looks different this time, unlike all the other photocopied models
        • 4 Years Ago
Riiiiiiight..... Because a Q7 looks like and A4, looks like an R8, looks like an A3, looks like a TT, looks like an A7???? I guess if you're blind it makes sense what you're saying....
except as shown the side profile is very much an Infiniti M

i want them to be a bit more aggressive in their new designs, but I don't want them making an Infiniti

though if I had to choose, I'd go Infiniti every time

        Actually, probably several someones Chinese.

A6, A7, A8, and they think they still don't have the market covered and they need an A9? Why?
Because there are more and more people on the planet which means that markets will expand very fast. Especially with China, India, Brazil and Russia creating a new upper and upper middle class, there is huge potential. And with big potential comes more models to appeal to more people.

Apart from that I guess there would be a big difference between the A8 and the A9. A8 is obviously tuned to be a super cruiser, but this one would be more of a Panamera Turbo ish car.
More people are buying things they can't afford (expensive cars, houses) and saving less money.
"A8 is obviously tuned to be a super cruiser, but this one would be more of a Panamera Turbo ish car."

And what market would that fill that the VW group doesn't already fill with the 1) Panamera Turbo, 2) Bentley Continental Flying Spur, 3) Bentley Mulsanne, 4) VW Phaeton?

Sorry, but I don't see it. The VW group already has a Panamera Turbo ish car -- the Panamera Turbo. And they've got more than 1/2 a dozen other cars above, below, and around that niche. There isn't any whitespace there in their product line.

        because detroit is still alive.

why you people forget that there is 6.5 billion on this globe.
I think it looks pretty awesome so far. Audis version of the Panamera huh...
This seems like a good idea to me. There should be plenty of a market for a sedan with the dynamics of the Panamera but without all the ugliness. It's a hell of a better starting point than the nose-heavy Phaeton, anyway.

Aside: the translator should not simply convert km/h to mph. I read it the first time and saw "fast in the top version of over 300 mph."

Hopefully Audi will learn from Porsche's mistake and sacrafice rear headroom for roofline...
