EVO drives the BMW 1 Series M Coupe prototype – Click above to watch the video after the jump

We're eagerly anticipating the official debut of the BMW 1 Series M Coupe at January's Detroit Auto Show, and moreover, we're lacing up our driving mocs in anticipation of some much-needed seat time. Before the car's official launch, however, the folks at EVO magazine were able to take the 1 Series M prototype for a quick spin, and might we say, we're jealous.

To recap, the 1M will be powered by the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six found in the Z4 sDrive35is with output rated at 340 horsepower. Combine that with a 3,300-pound curb weight, six-speed manual transmission and a seriously beefed up suspension and we have the makings for a truly impressive driving machine.

Follow the jump to watch EVO's Chris Harris take the 1 Series M out on the road, and stay tuned for the official smattering of images and details closer to the car's Detroit debut.

      can't wait..... to laugh my a$$ off at the clown who'll 50k for a perked up pop-bellied Mrs. Piggy on wheels.

      So whats everyone think $50K loaded?
      • 4 Years Ago
      So it's the same specs as a stage 1 Evo or STI without AWD. Brilliant!

      What is BMW waiting for? Just take the stupid squiggly wrap off the car and reveal it already. Talk about milking the media for extra hype.
        • 4 Years Ago
        I like the squiggly wrap. The Squiggly wrap is awesome. Is that a factory option? Or do I have to find an aftermarket solution for my squiggly wrap needs?

      Is it me or did it sound like this guy does not much clue about cars really?

      For 50-55k, I'd rather get a plain ol 135i and cut Dinan a check for the balance left over

      chris is driving an S-class at the beginning on the way to the airport. Funny talking all the way about core values of BMW in a merc.

      Needs more HP ;)
        • 4 Years Ago
        I'd rather it weigh 300lbs less than have more HP.
        • 4 Years Ago
        Yeah really, I mean you can get more out of a 135i with a few Dinan upgrades.

      3300 lbs. / 340hp --> (9.706 lbs/hp)

      I would have liked to see BMW reduce the weight a bit more for this package, if these specs are true.. I know they don't want to overshadow the M3 in terms of engine performance, but less weight would really help the car overall. This whole thing seems sort of like an E46 M3, if you just check the numbers.

      The base 2011 Mustang GT is 3605lbs. / 412hp --> (8.75 lbs/hp)

      I'd love to see a track-comparison of this M-1series and a Mustang GT, seeing as how they will probably be at relatively similar price points (~$41k for a FULLY loaded GT vs. ~$40k for a base M-1series). I'd bet that the 'stang would whoop it around a track, seeing as it matched the M3 toe-to-toe.

      Too bad its going to cost $40k.

      E30 M3 FTW!!!
        • 4 Years Ago
        I agree sortof...

        Overall the 1-series M is looking like a GREAT CAR. There is no question, and I think it shares the E30 M3 DNA, champion. Engine that makes people crave a Supra, handling and driving feel that the M-division provides. Interior that the Germans are renowned for. What else can you ask for?

        The problem the E30 M3 screwed a troll and got this. There is no body kit that can fix this, no amount of plastic surgery, the 1-series is just badly proportioned and looks like a bubble car. The sexiness the E92 provides is just not here.

        It went from epic to 'just doesn't feel right to cruise the strip with'.
