Spy Shots: Hyundai Veloster – Click above for high-res image gallery

Our gadget-filled world means we almost always have a camera at the ready. Reader James W. was out and about on the highways of Southern California when he spied a camo-clad Hyundai on the move. With his iPhone 3GS at hand, he was able to snap a few photos of what appears to be the upcoming 2012 Hyundai Veloster.

The wheels and most of the lines match a set of spy photos we posted earlier in the year, with the exception of the large bulge on the roof, which could very possibly be just the wind yanking on all that black camo. In any case, Hyundai is clearly working hard to hide the design of the rear half of the car, which makes us wonder about that much-speculated rear-access door even more. Thanks for the photos, James W!

This car is alredy dated. Hyundai cat find the way to compete against the CR-Z , and
the CR-Z is not all that bad after all. Honda just need to import 3k or 4k civic
hatchbacks a year and the game is over. Ohhhh just if Honda werent so stubborn.

This will give hell to Honda's CRz. This Hyundai is what that Honda shoulda been.

I'll quote autoblog as they introduced the CRz:

"The Honda CRz, 122 hp, 33 mpg, Worst of All Worlds"

The 1.6 GDi Veloster will achieve better than 40mpg, will be 140hp and WILL BE what the CRz should've been.

I saw a large group of Hyundais and Kias traveling to a industry favorite spot today. Didn't notice anything with any camo but I love seeing testing going on!

        Wait, where?
I've been noticing that hyundai has been testing their cars along the 60 freeway near the 71 interchange lately. I saw caravans of sonatas various Kias before they came out and I've also seen that veloster too!

Possibly my future car as well. I wish they would unveil the full thing already though!

I wish Autoblog would write in where the pictures were taken. I love seeing spied cars, and living in Southern California allows me to spot some occasionally. I got to see the Hyundai Elantra Touring near their HQs (I know, not as exciting), the Ford Start Concept at Cars&Coffee, a camo'd BMW X3 in Malibu and plenty others. When I hear about these sightings though and they don't tell me where, it drives me nuts trying to figure out from the background of the pictures. If they post the spy shots, ask where they're from!

Too tired to follow?! Do you kiss your mother with that mouth? I know someone who works with BMW and he told me their route, but I'm not that desperate to follow a Bimmer. I wish I saw Subaru's FT-86 when it was in Orange County though.

It would make sense since Hyundai is located in Fountain Valley off the 405. I saw a prototype Ford Edge after the refresh model had already been out for a few weeks and a few weeks agoI saw some prototype BMW or Audi camo'd out in Newport Beach, I wanted to follow it but I was way too tired and didn't have a decent camera.

I know.. looks like the 405 North (north O.C.) to me.

If you want to see cameo'd BMWs & MINIs drive north on Hwy 1 through Malibu between 3-4pm on Wednesdays and you'll see them driving south bound. Now that I said that, they might change their driving patterns...

        Good Luck!

Yea, I was thinking the same thing. Other parts don't really get those walls like that on the freeway, except maybe the 55.

That's where I saw the X3 a few months back. There was a prototype 5-series too, even though they'd already been on sale for a bit. I was in a Z4 at the time, so I didn't have a hard time keeping up with the X3, but the 5-series kept wanting to play so we did a bit of cat-and-mouse for a couple of miles.

Everyone in the hot hatch segment is in big trouble if Hyundai puts their 2.0T in this thing.

I sent a tip to this site that I've seen the Veloster in California MONTHS ago. On each occasion it was travelling up Highway 395 with a caravan of other Hyundai test cars (primarily the new Sonata and Sonata Hybrid.) Sigh....no one listening.
What's with the black hood/bumper Sonata pictured in the side-view mirror? Surely Hyundai isn't still disguising them...

Hi everybody, I'm the "James W" mentioned. I took the pictures with my iPhone this morning on the way to work and noticed that this was a new model. The pictures were actually taken on the 605 South (just passed the 5). I caught some good shots from my car ('99 VW Passat 1.8Turbo, manual of course!) I must say...I was really exciting finding it and getting the pics, lol. Thanks everybody, and AUTOBLOG for the cool article. (already showed all my car buddies, haha)
