Autocar drives the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport – Click above to watch video after the jump

Of all the phrases in the English language, few are likely to as accurately describe what it's like to drop the hammer on the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport as "absolutely crackers." That is if you're trying to keep things PG, at least. The crew from Autocar managed to beg, borrow and steal their way into the cockpit of what is perhaps our era's pinnacle of production automotive engineering for a quick blast through the European countryside. Fortunately enough for all of you, they were also kind enough to video the whole shebang.

With a total of 1,200 horsepower and 1,100 lb-ft of torque, the Super Sport is the standard Veyron on amphetamines. If you're brave enough, this horse will theoretically gallop all the way to 268 mph. Of course, you'd need a stretch of highway long enough to not only hit those speeds, but to come back down from them as well. There's no need to worry, they're not driving that black-and-orange one again, so hit the jump to see Autocar's take on the Veyron Super Sport.

i chuckle when auto rags have all these super car match-ups. in the end they are all just also rans. bugatti is the automotive marvel of the 21st century, and my hats off to the creators who brought back the bugatti to glory beyond even the original!
now if someone could just do the same with duesenberg. i can never understand why an american manufacturer can never create an exotic car(not race car) of a bugatti's caliber.
ford couldn't even get the thunderbird reincarnation right, and forget continentals(great name).
cadillac has never been able to recapture the luxury aura of the 50's
but to their credit, they have steadily improved the corvette
chrysler has the viper which has a panache but hardly a technical tour de force.

weary of having watched europe dominate in these areas.

Nice to HEAR a Veyron, for once. I like the wide tires.

I don't think the cyclist at 4:16 is much of a car guy.
he was probably like "i think i might have taken way too much this time"
The cyclist does not car because he probably owns a Gulfstream G V jet. lol

So how fast does it go in handling mode?

That cyclist at 4:16 is one lucky b_stard. Also, notice how he barely made any reaction.

Whenever I see one (there are 2 on the road were I live :-) ) I am always suprised at how quiet they are. Anyone else notice that when it cruised all the noise was from the tires?

But then under throttle... seriously spine tingly awesomeness

        Nope. The Phoenix area.

I'm just going to wait and buy one used, then install a hurst shift kit, Craiger's, and a Flowmaster cat-back. That should make it faster than all of the stock Veyrons I come across on a daily basis.

      1) They basically turned all Veyron owners into drivers of The Second Best Car In The World. I think those people are grateful. :))
      2) When the car speeds it looks like a cheap car chase movie, where they sped up the footage. :P
      3) Why does that guy think anyone would expect Veyron to be anything but relaxed to drive? O.o

Mason's F1 vs this one? Would rather over pay for Mason's car. I believe it left him speechless?
@Yaroukh. Speed alone does not make a great sports car. That's only a small part of it.

@mbinni: only that it wipes floor with that McLaren
