Thinking of buying a 2011 Saab? If so, you'll soon have the ability to watch it come together before your eyes; Saab is installing cameras in its Trollhättan factory. Customers will receive text messages with photos of their cars as they reach certain points in the assembly line. Eventually, Saab plans to add a real-time video feed of the cars being built. This sounds way more interesting than most reality television shows.

In addition to the cameras going in, Saab will soon offer customers the opportunity to take delivery of their cars right from the factory. The automaker says it is moving back towards building cars with a more personal touch, by manufacturing cars to order rather than churning out a steady stream of vehicles.

So true I would much rather watch cars getting built then some reality tv shows out there.

Maybe they could make a website tool where viewers of the website could turn some of the cameras and zoom in and out around the factory. Would be great to be able to zoom in on hard to see steps of the build. Also the ability to see a id number (not the real vin, just a random number substitute) so the buyer could put it in the website and it would automatically allow them to view the car they bought being built. Also would make for some cool wallpaper.

That would be so much fun. It's just like watching a house get built.

Exactly, it'd be even better if SAAB will compile a time lapse video and include it with car during delivery. Shouldn't be that hard, just make sure the webcam is mounted on the rig so it travels with the car along the assembly line.

Once this goes into effect Saab should advertise this, no other mainstream car company does this and little add in gimmicks like this could solidify Saab as a more upmarket brand

      Car porn?
Yes it is.. but there is no 70's porno sound track. You have to add that in yourself :D

This could work out well for Saab - it shows a commitment to quality.

The UAW could never do this... the last time that cameras focused on Chrysler workers, they were getting stoned in the parking lot.

This is such a good idea that I'm surprised Hyundai didn't think if it first (half joking, half not).

I live in S. Korea and have purchased two new Hyundais since 1998 and have picked up both from the factory. It's a good way to save a few hundred bucks as you don't have to pay the destination fee. Also, it's interesting to see the factory and to meet all the other gearheads who are picking up their cars too. The atmosphere was quite festive and the factories.

That's a good idea. I'd like to see my car being built. Make sure there are no idiots building my car.

Well gee thanks, left me with a question I can't answer.

FLashpoint, your an idiot. That is a very good looking Saab. it's clean, simple, and very attractive. I don't see why you need to complain.
And what action would you take if you saw an "idiot" building your car

SAABs are so ugly, I'd spend most of the video going "NO DON'T PUT THAT ON THERE"
Great idea! Now I can blandly watch my bland car being built via bland video! I can't imagine a worse waste of time!

One of the reasons I am a Saab fan. They go above and beyond for you. Great stuff Saab, with ideas like this, the company is going to be successful! Go Saab!!!
