Fabien Coulthard crashes out of the Bathurst 1000 – Click above to watch video after the jump

The Australian Supercar Bathurst 1000 has grown a reputation for being an all-out slugfest between two camps: those loyal to the Holden banner and those who eat, sleep and breathe Ford blue. While the racers are knocking fenders on track, spectators are typically knocking back beers by the truckload and locking horns to defend their respective brands. In all, the event makes Daytona look like a kiddie carnival ride. This past weekend's Bathurst got off on a scary foot with a spectacular single-car accident in the first lap.

Judging from this YouTube video, it looks like Fabien Coulthard, who started in the 21st position on the grid, blew the left rear tire on his Holden Commodore. The resulting loss of control sent the driver off track, and his touring car hit a sand trap sideways at considerable speed. The result was the kind of pirouetting explosion of sheetmetal that we haven't seen for a good while. Thankfully, Coulthard was able to hop out of the remains of his racer and give the crowd a hearty thumbs-up. Hit the jump to see the action for yourself. Thanks to everyone for the tips.

      Anybody know if Fabian is related to former F1 driver David coulthard ?

        @westbayair
        I have it on very good authority, (from the man himself) that he is David's 2nd cousin.

      Yep, pretty much sums it up.

      I like that the cars r basicly skins of the production car. I feel that if nascar would go this way it would put that fierce ford, chevy, dodge compitition back to the american products not just driver I'm a nascar fan but I could care less about the product thats why l've driven bmw 540 545 550 M5s since 97. I'm sell a ford man but nothing ford makes catches my eye the only car I would consider is the cts-v.

        Speed doesn't show many NASCAR races, they can't afford them. They show NASCAR pre-races and truck races, etc.

        Speed does show V8 Supercars. The sky has yet to fall because of this.

        That flying shot that captured the whole thing was perfect.

        Meanwhile here in the US, our "stock" car clones keep turning left. You know what the worst part about it is? If Speed were to show this Supercar series instead of NASCAR, there'd be an uproar about it.

      That was an awesome crash. I don't mean awesome as in good, I mean it as in it was awe-inspiring.

      Regardless, I'm glad that in the grand scheme of things, the guy walked away from the crash.

      Just goes to show you how well built race cars are and how well protected drivers are.

      A Coulthard wrecking on first lap? Hmm... sounds familiar.

      For anyone who cares, this race wil air in condensed form on Sunday the 17th at 3P eastern time. It's edited down to 2 hours, so we'll miss a lot, but still it's better than nothing.
