Spy Shots: BMW 1 Series M Coupe – Click above for high-res image gallery

The highly-anticipated BMW 1 Series M Coupe can't arrive fast enough. Roundel fans are calling it a return to BMW's driver-focused roots, and the lightened 1 Series with more power and a manual gearbox is aimed squarely at people who want a focused experience behind the wheel. So when's it arriving? According to the first round of prototype driving reports, the newest M car will debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show in January.

After it's big reveal, the BMW 1 Series M Coupe will be brought to market in May and according to previous reports just 2,700 examples will be produced with the largest allocation coming to the U.S. If you plan on buying one, you won't have trouble choosing a color since there are just three options; Alpine White, Jet Black and Valencia Orange Metallic.

I really don't understand BMW's approach to this car. If the rumors are to be believed its only going to have ~330 hp and be a couple of pounds lighter than the 135 which makes 300 hp. If is going to be such a limited production why didn't they go nuts with it, make it a 400 hp fire breathing beast that weighs somewhere in the upper 2000 lb range. I really thought the 2700 unit cap rumor had to be wrong because of the modest improvement in the performance figures that have been floating around.

I think the next Gen 1 series will look great with more linear lines.

I'm not down with this microwaved melted look

Blah blah blah. BMW is so Blah. Same style as last year, and the year before and before and before and before... If they want to compete, they better bring in the imagination engine.

      Such a good idea.

      Such bad execution.

Do these cars actually weigh any less than a 3-series? Supposedly the 1-series is heavy for it's size.

      They aren't much cheaper than a 3-series.

They are not good looking. It looks blunt and chunky. Why doesn't a small coupe like this look like a small 6-series, or even better? Why not a fastback 3-door 2+2 for a car this size, to make good interior room in a car with such limited outer dimensions?

3-series already has the 2+2 2-door with a trunk thing going. Why not make the 1-series DIFFERENT, instead of just smaller, and just as expensive and heavy.

It is 200lbs+ lighter than a 3 series and cheaper as well. Not being much cheaper depends what you are comparing. 135 is about the price of a 328 when comparably equiped and still about 5k cheaper than a 335. The room in the 1 series is big for how small the car actually is. It will fit 4 adults under 6ft with ease.

      still ugly though

definitely want to have one, but i think based on the price, looks and weight comparison to the M3 - I would rather get the M3
        • 4 Years Ago
of course that's assuming I could afford one in the first place

Needs a video/rap about putting an S54 engine in it, sung to the tune of 'put a ring on it'.
Turbos are nice, but needs a high–revving motorsports engine.

I dont think these are as good looking as the M cars of 10 years ago. But these 1 series cars look much better in person.
why do they put black tape over the hood emblem???? Oh gee i wonder what company made that car?
the next generation 1 series should be much better. there's too much bangle dna still in it: the wide eyed headlights, the droopy, bulging door panels, the squashed front. if you like fat pug dogs, you'll like the 1.

      but it drives great.
I wonder how much this thing is gonna cost. One also has to think that a turbo I4 would have been better for weight.
Problem is though that the 1-series is already a pig to begin with, the 4 wouldn't be enough for it to go like this would... yeah, weighs more than my 98 m3...

All those who are foolish enough to buy this overpriced car will again be looking at a Cadillac CTS-V from the rear.

I just hope they also fix up the interior some on the 1M, the current one series feels too cheap inside, to much hard plastic. But then again I guess this is supposed to be their budget M. But you know they aren't going to make it that cheap, probably around 45-50k once you put the normal options on. Might as well through in some better build materials for us spending that money!
Yeah, I'm in 100% agreement on the quality of the interior. Feels more on par with that of an American car than a BMW. The 3 series is a head-and-shoulders improvement. Even the way the 1 series center armrest goes up and down is pretty hokey. On one hand I'd love to buy a 1 series because I love the way it drives, but I can't live with the quality of that interior... it seems as if BMW cut way too many corners with it. For a few thousand more, it seems like the 3 series offers better value.

25-30k less than an M3? The M3 starts at 59k(coupe, ignoring the sedan). No way this will be 30k out the door. Even the 135i cost more than 30k. LOL
        • 4 Years Ago
I don't get people bagging on how this thing looks. It's the one car in the stable at BMW that you can actually put next to some of the classic beamers and see a family resemblance. It won't win a beauty contest, but it actually looks like a real BMW...and it's going to drive like a wet dream for 25-30 grand less than an M3 out the door.
I swore I would never buy a BMW again, but this is really changing my mind....
is there room for a baby car seat in the back?
