Next-generation Lexus GS spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

Following our report that the Lexus GS is scheduled to get a rather extensive overhaul next year, our spies have captured this test mule of Lexus' next 5 Series fighter out on the road.

Even though this mule uses the current GS body, we can see that extra panels have been added around the wheel wells, meaning a wider track is probably in order. What's more, the reworked GS underpinnings will go on to form the groundwork for the smaller, overhauled IS, which is set to debut in 2013.

Expect to see the next-gen GS show its restyled body within the coming months, with an official debut happening sometime next year. For now, click through the gallery to see high-res shots of the early-build mule roaming the streets.

This generation has always been kind of boring and I often forget about it. I'm sure I see a good number of them, but don't even notice because they just blend in with everything else. They don't look particularly luxurious from the outside.

The most bad-ass GS's were the ones from the late '90s with the quad tail lamps that were introduced with the dark "Something wicked this way comes" commercials and print ads. Those still look good on the road.

I own a 98 GS400. 300hp 300 tq. Was the worlds fastest automatic sedan when it debuted.

I love this car the power surprises me every time I step on the pedal...throws everyone in the car back in there seat. The ISF wasn't the first performance Lexus. I too also think the older GS are cooler then the new one.

just when you thought toyota cannot possibly make a more bland car(scion tc anyone?), lexus easily outdo toyota with this new gs. kudos to toyoxusion!

Nice, you're judging a mule's looks over the production model's looks. A mule is a prototype with a shell of the current model and the underpinnings of the upcoming model.

        You sir, fail at life.

      ZZZZZZzzzzzzz.......
All Lexi have this effect on me...except the cartoony LF-A, that just makes me giggle...

A redesign can't come soon enough. Maybe Toyota will drop that LFA V10 in the GS for a GS-F.

Yeah, I agree. -- It looks almost Volvoesque in the front end. :-/

Down ranked by fanboyz. Any way, I've never seen a headlight so close to the front fender. That's crazy.

GS-F will be a very nice stable mate :) I love the GS sedan.

As an owners of an '07 GS350, I'm losing faith in Lexus. Their designs have become increasingly mundane over the past 4 years and I get the impression they are not as 'hungry' as they use to be for market share. BMW, MB - even Infinity has shown they want to earn the buyer's respect. Not seeing that love from Lexus.

        Are you serious ??

I will GLADLY take your Lexus GS off your hands if this is how you feel.

Lexus hasnt tried to earn buyers respect? you cant be serious... dude Lexus has the BEST dealer experience and better customer service you can find. They even have The ISF, LFA upcoming GSF, and F-Sport Line parts. If that's not hungry for market and doing for there customers then nothing is.

      I love mule rims.

This can't come soon enough. The design has aged well, but it's been outclassed for about 2 years already (especially in the performance and gizmo departments).

This is going to be a nice ride.
