2012 Volkswagen Beetle spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

Earlier this year we learned that Volkswagen has been readying a new New Beetle, and we now have the first spy photos of the next-generation Bug out testing. Rumor has it that this car could debut as early as next month at this year's Los Angeles Auto Show, but we think a Detroit or Geneva debut is much more likely.

Though still in test mule stages, it's obvious that the next Beetle will take a lot of its styling cues from Volkswagen's Ragster concept, first shown in 2005. The longer, flatter greenhouse and softened curves give the cutesy Bug a more aggressive stance. Perhaps Volkswagen is trying to break the Beetle out of its "chick car" stereotype.

The 2012 Beetle will ride on the new Golf VI platform, and it's expected that powertrains will be shared between both cars. Volkswagen's 2.5-liter inline-five is a safe bet, as is the 2.0-liter TDI four, but sources within Volkswagen have told us that the next-generation Beetle will be available with a pretty potent engine. "Something you can take to the track," they said. Hmm... Whatever the case, we'll know more when the car makes its official debut within the next few months.

Looks oddly like a 356 Porsche, only slightly. Hope the TT/RS inline 5 makes its way inside the engine compartment. Like the 2.5 five in the Rabbit, fine engine, ask somone who actualy owns one, not read about it.

      Is that a PT Cruiser?

It looks a lot more retro and well-defined than the current one. I like it a lot!

      LMAO... is it April already?!?

Seriously, this think looks like a squashed Beetle from the front-end, and a Panamera from the back end. Neither of which I'd want sitting within 100 feet of my driveway.

      What about the Microbus instead?

      boy, a less functional Golf.

yessirree, VW doesnt want to send over a Scirocco as it will cannibalize Golf sales, but a Beetle, well thats another matter.

All those who wanted a scirocco for the track, VW thinks the new beetle is your answer

It's like the old Beetle mated with a Porsche Panamera (in profile only for that one).

I like that it has a more upright windshield and more room in the back...the current gen is all windshield, and no room.

It will be interesting to see if VW brings it with optional front/rear light housings and hoods (functional scoop) to change the appearance, esp. since this might make a nice raised baja variant.

The roofline has a STRONG Porsche 356 feel about it.

This car is way butched up.

Agreed...the silhouette looks like a 2dr PT Cruiser fastback.

Chop-top the roof a little more would look a little better methinks...

Hmmmm....with that profile I see the rear end of a '40 Ford and a continental kit. Aftermarket guys get busy!

It looks like a homemade Bettle from 1996 when some guy saw the real model for 1998.

      This is just awful.
