General Motors has issued a recall notice for 2009-2010 all-wheel drive Cadillac CTS' and CTS-Vs due to an issue with the front passenger-side knee airbag.

In a collision, the front passenger's knees are at risk of being hit – however, this risk is only for passengers not wearing their seat belts. Dealers are instructed to replace the glove box assembly and, if necessary, modify the instrument panel structure. Per usual, these services are free of charge and the recall is scheduled to begin on or before October 20th, 2010.

      Just off the wire:
All major OEMs recall ALL their cars due to the possibility of injury to unrestrained passengers in the event of a crash. Unfortunately, none of the OEMs have offered a foolproof method for fixing the cars.

So funny! I was going to mention that but figured nobody would know what I was talking about.

It's really disappointing how the automaker has to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to redesign this because of a passenger's mistake.

      WEAR YOUR SEATBELT.
If it were only that inexpensive.

Lets just talk about how kick-arse the CST-V is since this news is uneventful. I for one prefer the sedan version, although that doesnt mean I would turn down any CTS regardless of trim/body.
i would take any CTS-V given to me, however i have a softspot in my heart for sporty wagons. i would give a kidney and a good portion of my spleen for a CTS-V wagon...
How about the risk to their spleens?
I know. And what about damage to your eyes from all that shiny chrome and piano black trim? Just sayin...

I feel if your dumb enough to get in a car and not wear your seatbelt then you deserve the punishment you get. Buckle up people or let darwin work his magic!

Why is this a recall? It seams the airbags work fine if your using the safety equip correctly.

      wear seatbelt
      ???
      Profit!
I don't follow ... so this is only a problem if the passenger isn't wearing a seat belt? Aren't you legally bound to wear seat belts? Knees are going to be your last concern if you get into an accident without a seat belt. Why the recall?
Yeah, and you can get hurt in an accident without your seatbelt on that isn't severe enough for the airbags to deploy... I too think that your knees will probably be the least of your concern if you are in a serious enough accident for the airbags to deploy and you aren't wearing your seatbelt....

Roof strengthening isn't designed to keep people in, it's designed to keep the cockpit intact.

        @spin cycle,

The vast, vast majority of rollover deaths occur when the occupant is ejected from the vehicle, due to not wearing their seatbelt.

        paul34:
The CTS has the roof rigidity upgrades, I'm sure of it, the A pillar is ridiculously thick.

Also, the roof rigidity issue isn't because of not using seatbelts. If the roof crushes in on you you are looking at a serious head injury, whether you're belted in or not. In fact racers say don't use a 5-point harness if you don't have a roll cage because it increases head injuries if the roof crushes because you can't squirm out of the way of the crushing roof.
        Indeed.

Also, there's the thing about increased roof rigidity (not on the CTS or CTS-V necessarily) due to people who do not wear their seatbelt either.

I am tired of having to suffer inconvenience, increased cost, and decreased performance (with increased fuel consumption) due to these idiots. Who cares? If you don't want to wear a seatbelt, fine - but it's your risk to take.

I suspect all these "minor" recalls are to protect the manufacturer against frivolous liability lawsuits (aka by the ambulance chasers). If some moron gets seriously injured or dies in a vehicle crash, even if that person wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was driving drunk, etc., if the lawyers ever get a whiff that GM knew about some specific "shortcoming" (such as this knee airbag thing), the lawyers would surely sue.

This is also the same reason many car OEM GPS's are programmed to not let you fiddle/change while the car is moving. Idiots and their lawyers would sue even if they caused their own injuries for being stupid.

So, um, just use common sense and wear seatbelts?
More like risk to the neck, mandatory neck brace to the recaros

      haha another toyota recall.......

      oh wait nvm
Dear intelligent government employees: please introduce legislation not requiring automakers to account for un-buckled passengers.
        Seriously.
We need to take responsibility for our actions. If that involves a broken neck, so be it.
