The eagle-eyed crew over at Auto Express has managed to get its hands on a few photos of what may very well turn out to be a more hardcore version of the mighty Audi R8. Spotted at a gas station near the Nürburgring, the car was wearing a host of mechanical and aesthetic additions borrowed straight from the German manufacturer's racing program. Along with a set of becoming orange stripes, the mid-engine terror wears a new, more aggressive front splitter up front and massive air intakes on both sides. That hardware should look awfully familiar. The company makes use of similar tech on its R8 LMS racer.
Around back, the hotter R8 uses large, center-up exhaust outlets and a significantly different engine cover. Auto Express seems to feel that those cues may indicate a powerplant with more than 600 horsepower nestled behind the seats. From what we understand, there are massive brakes tucked behind the vehicle's wheels and gutted cabin in place of the leather-lined interior.

That sounds like our cup of tea, alright, but what does Audi have planned for this thing? Auto Express is already calling the roided-out racer the R8 GT RS, which is as sexy a name as we could conjure. Here's hoping we hear more about this one soon.

Update: As it turns out, this is no Audi test mule. As the good people at Fortitude have pointed out, the mean-looking R8 is actually an MTM creation. Stay tuned.

        It isn't official.

They are just surmising that this is a further upward extension of the R8 GT. So, like Porsche does, the bloggers hypothesize an added RS suffix, like the GT3 RS, or GT2 RS.

It could be named something else entirely. Maybe just R8 RS, sans the GT bit.

(Sidebar: I never understood why race-replica, track-focused cars bear the Grand Touring monicker, which would better fit the more comfortable, well optioned road-cars, other than FIA's racing mis-nomenclature of race classes as GT1, GT2, and so on. they should have been GS, grand SPORT. Racing is a track SPORT, not road touring.)

As if Lamborghini's sister car is any less alphabet soup...

This is not an Audi car. This is an MTM R8 -- says MTM on the license plate mount and it's not even a german license plate. Probably their test mule for the twin turbo setup.

        Interesting.

I hope it doesn't burn up.

But, even if this is an MTM car, I hope Audi does do a RWD-only race-rep version, as a step up from even the R8 GT, which itself is utterly drool-worthy.

It would look even cooler, if it had a Lambo Murcielago center single exhaust outlet, with the two turbos and their wastegates, or common wastegate plumbed into that.

I like the F-40 like slatted polycarbonate engine cover.

This car with my previously suggested SR71 blackout treatment would look spectacular. A couple of variants of black, matte and gloss, with some dark metal finishes and black carbon fiber on some detail parts, and a few well chosen applications of semi-gloss blood red, around the central front mesh grille, around the trailing edge of the side blades, and red engine parts. All black leather, alcantara, and CF interior with red detailing and stitching.

That would look great with the GT's dark tail lights, and some modified R8 headlights with the matte silver housing trim painted semi-gloss black leaving only the lighting reflector surfaces, and the reflective "chrome" edges not blackened. Make the lights look even more integrated into the intakes below them.

You are right about MTM but those are german license plates. The red ones are for dealers and shops, they can be used for test drives.

Those graphics and that interior color are KILLING the car...gawd...who do they think they are, Porsche (one of the fews cars that can pull of orange with outlandish graphics + text, IMO of course)?!

I can't decide if it is supposed to be race-like livery

Or a weird attempt at confusion-based camouflage.
