Yesterday, we reported that Volkswagen was planning to name Jonathan Browning as its new CEO of United States operations. At 11:00 AM today, VW did just that – Browning will officially assume the role on October 1st of this year.
Browning has held many executive sales and marketing positions within the automotive industry. He was recently tasked with managing the national sales team for all of the Volkswagen Group brands. Now, Browning will be a driving force behind the automakers push to become a leading brand in the United States.

VW Group recently invested $1 billion dollars in a new Chattanooga assembly plant and is also planning a large marketing campaign to rally sales around the redesigned Volkswagen Jetta. The target sales goal for 2018 is 200,000 Audi models and 800,000 Volkswagen models – high goals, indeed.

Congratulations to Mr. Browning and the Volkswagen Group.

Jonathan Browning will direct U.S. growth strategy for transition to volume brand

Herndon, Va. (Sept. 13, 2010) - Volkswagen Group of America announced today that Jonathan Browning, 51, has been named President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America effective October 1, 2010. He is currently responsible for the global directing of the Volkswagen Group's National Sales Companies (NSC).

"Volkswagen will play an even stronger role in the important U.S. market going forward, said Christian Klingler, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG for Sales. "Jonathan Browning is an acknowledged expert on this market, its customers and its sales structures."

Jonathan Browning succeeds Stefan Jacoby, who has left the company. Browning has held numerous executive sales and marketing posts worldwide at General Motors (GM) and Ford Motor Company. He was vice president of European sales, service and marketing at the GM Group from 2001 to 2008, and simultaneously chairman of Vauxhall Motors from 2006 to 2008, becoming GM vice president of global sales, service and marketing in 2008. Browning worked for the Ford Group from 1997 to 2001, first as executive director of marketing for Ford Europe and then as the global managing director of Jaguar. He moved to the Volkswagen Group in June 2010.

"The U.S. will always be one of the largest and most important markets for automobiles," said Klingler, adding that this affords the Volkswagen Group significant growth opportunities. Klingler also reiterated the target to sell 200,000 Audi brand models and 800,000 Volkswagen brand models in 2018. "Volkswagen and Audi will become leading brands in the U.S."
Volkswagen Group is investing one billion dollars in the new Chattanooga plant, will be launching a unique marketing offensive in the U.S. and recently celebrated the world premier of the Jetta in New York's Times Square. According to Klingler: "The Group's board and top management fully support this market and its customers."

      The new big Jetta campaign - "look America! Here's what you want! Cheap plastics!"

      If they have a clue, they are keeping it a secret. Cars designed exclusively for the American market; don't people that have bought VW's over the years want that 'German feel'? etc..... For the American market sounds like that might mean - 'dumbed down'.

      How long have they blown the Van market here? You know something that captures the iconic 'Bus' image?

        VW in the German market is considered a cheap car. They might be different due to saftey regulations but its not like they use lesser quality materials in the American models.
        A lot of BMWS and Mercedes lower line cars are just everyday cars in Germany. Both these names mean luxery to Americans no matter what model. For instance you have to get to a 500 series Mercedes to have a luxery car. 100 and 200 models whatever they are, are taxi cabs over there.

      Lets see if Browning can get VW to realize this:

      We don't want the newfangled Beetle! We want what the original Beetle was!!!!! Fun, nimble, economical, easy to maintain and mod, great looking and affordable!

      That's what we want in the USA! We want what the original Beetle, the original Rabbit, and the original type 1, 2 and 3 offered!!! THAT'S WHAT WE WANT! Stop trying to tell us what we want. Stop giving us lackluster products that you (VW) use lame marketing to try to convince us that it's cool and desirable.

      VW used to be so much. I'll never believe, with all the abilities and modern advancements in everything, that a manufacture can not deliver the same thing today and tomorrow that they used to bring us yesterday.

      Love the look of 2012 Beetle...finally a masculine looking model. I came close to picking up a used 2000 Beetle for a few thou just to keep in the garage like my dad did with his silver 67 Bug.....but I never loved the 99 Beetle 1.0 because I agree with so many, very feminine looking - especially since most of the ones sold were lime green and lemon yellow....with matching flower in dashboard vase.....YUCK!!!! Even the way the driver sat in the car wasn't Butch enough. So although I love the look, sigh...I fear as with everything else in this world, the Beetle 2.0 can easily get up to $30k new......that is so not what the 67 Bug was about back in the day. I remember my uncles and dad jerryrigging their Beetles, chopping Bugs up and bolting onto their....once or twice when the thing blew up, easy togo to the used auto dealer and pick up the same car for cheap. The new ones costing well over $25K diminishes the "everybody can have one" kind of car but instead of complaining about that fact of life with the Beetle, that's life these days...nothing is cheap anymore! :)

      The new Jetta looks like "Wonder Bread." Very ho hum, very staid, overly conservative, just not exciting. I definitely appreciate the size, value and pricing of Jettas and surprisingly, I really liked the prior model for some reason. I think these days I'm very in tune with the "shapes of cars today." For example, Hyundai is off the charts with their design (2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2011 Kia Optima) as well as some awesome looking coupes these days (2009 Honda Accord coupe, 2010 Infiniti G37). I agree that Jetta's competition, Honda Civic, Chevy Cruze are extremely unexciting to look at, as well, I was really really sad that the newest Jetta came out the way it did. I'm not sure what I think about the new Passat. I think I like it quite a bit but I need another look see to make sure I see enough difference from the slightly smaller Jetta. The new Toureg and the CC Passat are what I'm talkin about!!!! Great styling, therefore seeing the new Jetta was painful to me. I still don't understand why VW ventured into the minivan world, I just don't see that as a need. Using a Dodge Caravan body in 08 (I realize there were changes to sheetmetal, doors, etc. in 2010) was another moment of holding my head in my hands in aghast. As for the Tiguan.............well....who could dislike that car? I really wish there was some kind of back back area behind the back seat......I very much don't like the very little area back there. For my family small CUV/SUV, we chose Mazda CS7 for the great style and plenty of room in the trunk/latch area to throw a bike into or two....plus the usual overly expensive Home Depot run. Can't wait for the 2012 Beetle, will enjoy seeing new buyers, I hope. I hope to see some male Mini Cooper buyers over to the new Bug......and hoping more of the gals will stick with Honda CRX, Civic, Versa, Ford Focus......let the dudes have this Bug......my biggest gripe is I am convinced these Beetle 2.0's easily cst $25k and up to $30k - that is so "un bug" like to me.......the big draw was cheap car, great car back when I was a kid.....these days things cost too much, even buying a new Bug......Cheers

      mr. browning, remember this, put a diesel in all models.
      diesels will prove to be much better then hybrids.

      They seem to be focusing on mid-size cars, including one unique to the US market. What buyers in this segment care about most is quality and reliability. You don't have to do much searching to find that this is not what they offer.
