2011 Volkswagen Touareg – Click above for high-res image gallery

The words "performance" and "hybrid" are typically only bandied about in the same sentence by marketing types. Here in the real world, lugging around an extra few hundred pounds of batteries is no way to sharpen a vehicle's dynamics, but if the rumors kicking around the interwebs are to be believed, that's exactly what Volkswagen has planned with a new R version of the Touareg. Auto Evolution reports that engineers are hard at work on a new version of the CUV that will pack a punch from both a gasoline V8 and a powerful electric motor.

As you might imagine, specs for such a monstrosity aren't exactly solid, but the Italian rag says VW is shooting for 500 horsepower from the V8 and 47 horsepower from an electric motor. Sure, that means the high-rider will pack a grand total of 547 ponies, but we're more interested in the mountain-moving levels of torque available from such a combination. Sounds like a fine way to embarrass a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, if nothing else.

"Here in the real world, lugging around an extra few hundred pounds of batteries..."

A few hundered pounds? Are you joking??? Damn this is supposed to be AUTOBLOG so get your infos right and don't write such nonsense.
The battery weights only 147 pounds. (its a small battery instead of the spare tire)

The 47 hp electrical engine is weak compared to the lexus rx450h 167 HP (front) + 68 PS(rear)...

The toareg is way too overpriced, if was priced around Ford Edge/Grand Cherokee range it would sell, at 40 grand most people would rather get n MKX/RX.
Highly unlikely that I'd get the MKX over the Edge, never mind the Touareg.

As for the Touareg, why doesn't it compete against the MDX or RX? I agree it matches well against the JGC.

The Touareg is definitely not a bad looking vehicle. If only VW could price this thing more competitively.

I cannot understand why the Acura MDX is selling so well, but it does, even though
the grill is ugly. This should be the Touareg's prime target. The only thing hurting
      it is the asking price.

I don't see the point of making a Touareg Hybrid R... however, this might be an indication that That there might be a Cayenne S Hybrid in the pipelines. since Touareg and Cayenne Hybrid have an identical system, it wouldn't be far-fetched for VW group to share a V8 Hybrid power-train across the two, and perhpas install it on the Audi Q7 as well... Although i don't agree with a V8 Hybrid power-train, the above would make sense in this weird world...

It is just me or Taureg is a 4 door Golf that seats higher off the ground?
        that would be the Tiguan
500 hp V8? Where are they going to come up with that engine? Who is going to buy a $90,000 VW that gets 22mpg?
How much do you all think an Acura MDX cost? Better yet, how much do you think a 547 horsepower MDX would cost? New technology is usually expensive.
I'm not talking about the high performance version, but about the one
        shown in the photos.

A loaded MDX is about $54k.

From what I am observing, there are very few Touaregs around when
compared to the volume of MDXs seen on the roads. VW needs
to wake up, they have fine looking vehicle here.

A high performance Touareg is a pipe dream for most people, unless you
have money to blow and you already have the Porsche version.
