The 2012 Chevrolet Malibu has been busted again, wearing front and rear camo, which is more camo than it wore the last time we saw it. It's clear that the flanks are getting just enough etching to add some visual interest, but we're wondering how far the front and back treatments will move toward Regal-ish styling or whether they'll carve a place of their own. That Volvo- and Camry-esque trunk treatment has really got us going...
According to Inside Line, this version of the 'Bu could go international, which makes the expectation of "a complete interior overhaul" a necessity. Even so, a navigation screen is only expected to be optional. Rumored engines are a direct-injection four-cylinder, a hybrid, a 3.6-liter V6 and a turbocharged ECOTEC.

      I live in Spain and rumors say this car will replace the very poor Chevy Epica that Chevrolet sells actually in Europe. I´ve driven the actual Chevy Malibu several times in Mexico and the car is really excellent and does the job of its european competitors in an excellent manner and at a more affordable price (of course this car is much better than its japanese competition). This car has nothing to envy to its europen counterparts and the new version has to be much better. I´m relly expecting this car to arrvive to Europe and if so, Chevrolet has allready a secure buyer for this Malibu (even for the actual one if they decide to suddenly bring it to Europe).

      Way too early to tell what with all the camo it has, but its starting to look pretty good... then again, I still think the current Malibu is one of the nicer looking family sedans out there still.
      They definitely have to differenciate it from Buick's offerings.

      Hmmm, looks like the shots were taken in a rental car parking lot. Must be ready to break cover soon, final testing in its native environment.

      Having seen it sans camo, I have to say that it has a very robust, solid yet sporty look to it. The entire package makes me sorta forget the g8...though, I cannot see the Malibu getting the same power.

      The new Impala looks even better...

      As for "the next Malibu could go global":

      The Chevrolet/Holden Epica built in South Korea (I think China as well) and sold elsewhere in the world is due for a revamp or replacement. It's still based on an older GMDAT platform and not Epsilon (II), and is powered by a GMDAT-built, Porsche-designed I6 as opposed to the GM parts bin Ecotec four and High Feature V6. All in all, it would make sense for the new 'Bu to be built in Bupyong and Shanghai in addition to Fairfax and Detroit-Hamtramck, as an Epica replacement.

      So is this basically turning into the sedan version of the Camaro? I thought it was reported that the tail lights were getting a bit of Camaro treatment and the headlights are buldging out a bit to widen the front.

      Hopefully it's tasteful enough to retain current owners while grabbing Saturn Aura owners before they go to a different automaker altogether.

        It it's a sedan version of the Camaro, maybe they can follow it up with a coupe version and bring back the Nova nameplate. I'd love to see a 2012 Chevy Nova SS.

      Doesn't look like an improvement. The current on is one of the nicest bread and butter sedans on the road.

      GM, no orange in the tail lights please.........unless you are intentionally putting orange in there so you can remove it as a mid-cycle refresh.

        Doesnt matter to me if its red or amber, I've never had an issue with mistaking a red turn signal with anything else. Regardless, the lens should not be amber, its just ugly. Just my personal preference though.

        I'm with fixitfixit... it's ridiculous that we have all this advanced lighting technology today, from xenon to LEDs, and yet cars are still made with red rear turn signals (often not even separate from the brake lamps). It's common sense that having a unique color and dedicated lamp for turn signals makes them instantly recognizable. You don't need to wait for a flash or look at both sides of the car to see if the car in front of you is braking or turning.

        And the lenses can be any color, so it's not a styling issue. There are cars with red lenses that illuminate amber (Aston Martin, 2003-ish Mercedes CLK, current 7-series), and of course white and smoked lenses can light up amber, too.

        It still shocks me that the German brands have gone back to red in the US market (it's not legal in many, if any, markets outside of North America)...especially Audi, who combines it with the brake lamp, using 21st-century LED technology for a 1940s-era result.

        @MechE, surely you've been behind a vehicle that uses one bulb per side behind a red lens for both the brake and turn signal, and had the driver tap the brakes when you either couldn't see both sides of the car/truck? Or had a driver pump the brakes once or twice at roughly the same frequency as a turn signal's flash? Or been behind a car with one bulb burned out?

        It's not a matter of your driving skill or familiarity with the lighting configuration of every car on the road (and I'm pretty good at that, too), it's just logic. An amber rear light is recognizable as a turn signal the instant it illuminates. A red signal light needs to flash once and reilluminate before a following driver can be really feel confident in what the first driver is intending. And being that Americans tend to do things like signal *as* they change lanes (rather than before), every millisecond can help avoid a collision. Just seems like a simple solution that works (and doesn't cost much to implement).

        I am very pro-amber turn signals. The lenses don't have to be amber, but they really should illuminate amber for safety reasons. I'm planning to do a euro tail light swap on my car for this very reason.

      Wow what have they done to the 'bu. It looks like some people got a hold of the clay model of the current design, grabbed hold of the rear end and started to pull. It looks all stretched out from the rear doors back. Not flattering at all.
