Porsche 918 Spyder – Click above for high-res image gallery

What could be better than a mid-engine Porsche with a 500-horsepower 3.4-liter V8 and an additional 218 ponies courtesy of a pair of electric motors? More power, obviously. And that's exactly what a report from Autocar alleges is going to take place for the upcoming 918 Spyder. According to the report, Porsche is said to be enlarging the displacement of the gas-swilling engine in order to extract more grunt from the mill.

The Brit pubs goes on to posit that the production 918 Spyder, which was first seen moving under its own power at Pebble Beach, will sport both soft and hard tops along with a somewhat beefier front end in order to provide adequate crash resistance. Also, somewhat predictably, the concept's 22-inch wheels are very likely to be downsized and the side exhausts may be rerouted to the rear when the hybrid supercar hits the market.

Assuming all goes according to schedule, Porsche is said to be planning a run of about 1,200 918 Spyders, each costing over $625,000 (£400,000) when it finally goes on sale sometime around 2014.

Love the button labelled "Press" on the door handle! who are they designing it for? The dolts that can afford it but to stupid to be able to use it?
      I'm all for more power...

...and the exhaust pipes should stay where they are right now!

Btw... does that rear spoiler lift up when going quicker?
They are going to move the exhaust to the back. The tires are going to be smaller so if that's true, it will mean the wheel well will be too. So ultimately it will look more ordinary; that would be a shame.

I hope the article is wrong in the looks. Keep the looks and swap into the bigger motor.

I said it before and I'll say it again. This car would be much better, IMO, and lighter(fact) without the hybrid system and instead use the Carrera GT engine. The howl of that V10 is epic! Nobody that buys this car is being environmentally conscious , let's not kid ourselves. The hybrid system just adds complexity and weight. A naturally aspirated engine is simple and lighter.

        [chants] V10...V10...V10...

Who cares about your opinion? They already made the CGT, now its time for a little bit of progress. You want the V10 howl then buy a CGT!! At least Porsche is doing really cool sports stuff with hybrid technology.

We heard you the first time. That technical achievement has been done allready: it was called the Carrera GT. Move on.
So you want it to be a restyled Carrera GT? Personally I think this is more than Porsche's next halo car. It sort of represents all the best technology we currently have. And when I get mine I plan to commute with it all on electric power, except when I want to scare people by letting the V8 howl :P

        @trustedcarsalesman

I love to see you tell someone that bought a McLaren F1 that says "the McLaren F1 is epic" to "move on". Or better yet, when ever Autoblog posts anything about McLaren F1 and readers comment with "this car is legend" or "best car of all time" tell them to "move on".

Get a life seriously. And IMHO, no car salesman is "trusted".

I just hope they change the wheels before production. Beautiful car, ugly wheels.

Typically my admiration for Porches is limited to the hatchbacks of the 80s (classy, not too showy.) But this is like sex on wheels. I've never seen airscoops do what they're doing on this.

I'd believe it. God I love porsche. Playing it similar to how they played the carrera gt concept reveal and subsequent car release. I don't think i've been this excited about a new supercar in a long long time.

        Or any kind of car.

The 918 is going to be stick.
...and I thought it couldnt get any better. The sad thing is I'm neve gonna be able to afford this as I'm spending my time commenting and drooling instead of advancing my career!!

      :-)

In the words of the great philosopher Clarkson:

      MORE POWERRRRRRRR!!!!
Whoa that's a small car, seeing the two people in it. It's about the size of an NSX? Where the hell did they fit all those electric stuff? No trunk perhaps?
It would be a shame if they moved the exhaust pipes. It looks awesome as is.
