Jay Leno's Garage gets private time with Porsche 918 Spyder – Click above to view video after the jump

One of the things we like most about Jay Leno, aside from being a hugely knowledgeable car guy, of course, is his access. Who else would Porsche pick for some private time in a hangar with its forthcoming hybrid supercar, the 918 Spyder, during last week's festivities in Pebble Beach? Certainly not us. We waited by the phone, but sadly Porsche never rang.

Jay did get the call, however, and in addition to being allowed to place his all-denim outfit within inches of the 918 Spyder, he also got face time with Michael Mauer, Head of Design for Porsche. Jay didn't have total access, however, as Mauer shot down his request to open the hood and view the car's high-tech secret powertrain. Ah, well.

Follow the jump to hang with Leno as he learns more about the 918 Spyder straight from the designer's mouth.

Anybody else notice the transparent plastic discs missing from the rims?
Yes, I noticed that they were gone as well! And I love the cameras replacing the mirrors! Everything about this car reeks of sex!
The car looks awesome. However, I would change the wheels and swap the hybrid out for a Carrera GT V10.
But - from the vague specs they've given for this with ICE and EMs combined, you'd be down about 100hp by doing the swap.
God forbid, i'm actually siding with simplecar on this, i think the point he is making is that a naturally aspirated v10 is a pretty sexy option, and surely they'd figure a way to wring an extra couple of hundred horses out of it
        • 4 Years Ago
For once I also agree with SimpleCar. I don't see the point in having the hybrid part of this car. That's not to say that I don't believe a supercar can't be a hybrid, but I don't feel like the technology is yet feasible. Maybe when this car is out in the wild, I'll be proven wrong, but I stand by my opinion until then.

I just feel like, it's good to be environmentally responsible, but for the small number of people who will own one of these and the very limited amount they will be driving them, it seems like making it a hybrid is just a grand technological achievement that doesn't really translate to a big effect in reality of things.

I am sure that one day technology will allow auto manufacturers to make cars that are both very exciting and still environmentally friendly, but right now I don't see that really working out. The car still looks absolutely fabulous though, and being a Porsche I'm pretty sure it will be great to drive. I just can't help but feel that it would have been even better if it had a NA V10 or even a V8.

Sorry, I'd give and arm and a leg to get this 'as is'. The Carrera GT is a legend, but times have changed and this beast combines some of the latest technology with a lot of the good from the GT.

DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL. One of the sexiest cars around.

LOL "if you can't spell it, you can't afford one"
        really? cuz that sounds dumb
Carrera GT is that way ------------->

Why would anyone want to buy a new car with an old engine in it? Especially one that will cost upwards of $400K!

@ Junzhi, " I am sure that one day technology will allow auto manufacturers to make cars that are both very exciting and still environmentally friendly " - there has to be a car that's the first , maybe it's this one.

WOW, that sounds pissed the F off.

      Love it.

      Want it.

      Cant afford.

      Damn it.

@simplecar and @turall, 1 its still a "hybrid" and its street legal, so ill take that over the LeMans car where you can only track it. I would love to drive the 918 down that so call hybrid only road in california and blast pass all those damn priussses
        • 4 Years Ago
        @SimpleCar

You're right, it has the RS Spyder's 3.4 Liter V8. Le Mans stuff

(okay, technically the CGT's engine was intended as a Le Mans engine too...)
Doesn't sound as good as the Carrera GT...formula 1 stuff.
It's a great looking car, but Porsche is going to truly regret quoting 70+ MPG estimates. I will eat my own fingers if the car gets more than 40 MPG in real world current EPA testing. Total BS.
        @Sparrk

Yeah lots of things will change, like the WAY TOO hi-tech center stack and those wagon wheels!

But I agree, I'll be surprised if it's really going to get 70+mpgs in real world testing. It would be awesome if it does, but that's a pretty lofty number. But so long as it's north of 20mpgs, then all will be well because that's still leagues better than most other super cars out there!
That's not the point. Just like GM did with the Volt, stating the most efficient figure for these cars will only produce bad press. Just tell everyone that it gets 40+MPG with some electric driving and mostly ICE... it's not like anyone has better MPG figures with their supercar.
@ 6SPD_soul , Porsche usually knows what they are doing , i'm sure they tested the car. but it's still under development , lots of things will change until the car goes on sale.
Would you REALLY complain about even "just" 40 MPG? Really?

I mean yeah, I always go by the saying to under-promise and over-deliver, but truthfully if driven in a sane matter, the very things that make this car amazing as a sports car, can also help it's economy... lightweight, aerodynamic body, gearing.

I notice they took off the plastic disc off the wheels. I also suspect the exhaust will move to the rear.
Wow I just realized the exhaust exits ahead of the engine... I don't think I've ever seen a car designed that way. 0_o

How did know it wouldn't take long before Leno got his hands on one of these beauties.

I love the looks of this car.
@ trustedcarsalesman , Porsche is trying to convince FIA and ACO to allow hybrids to race , that's why they invest so much in hybrid technology , with the 918 and the GT3 hybrid.
I hope to god they make it a le mans GT1 car...
What a beautiful car? It looks awesome.
Video is great about the car. Beauty, power, technology... Leno further reinforces his d0uche-i-ness by calling it the Nuremburgring. I wish he would go away. I can ignore the Tonight Show, but why does he have to intrude on my passion for Autos?
in EV mode it sounds liek a fraekin spaceship! and the V8 sounds like what a modern V8 should sound like, growling with rage
