Porsche 918 Spyder Concept at Pebble Beach – Click above for high-res image gallery

While we've heard rumblings that Porsche was going to show its hot new 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept here at Pebble Beach, it appeared that the car was only going to be shown to a select few at private events scattered around the Monterey Peninsula during the week.

Well, today at the Pebble Beach Lodge, site of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the company surprised us by driving the hybrid supercar up to the concept lawn for all to see – and hear. They did a quick turn around after sitting still for a second and as the V8 rumble died away, the car started moving forward again. A couple of people were taken by surprise as they thought the driver may have forgotten to engage the parking brake, but no, the car had switched over to battery power.

We shot a little video and took a few pics as we pushed through the massive scrum surrounding the car when it finally came to rest. Follow the jump to see the video and click below to see our high-res images.

UPDATE: Porsche has revealed that the 918 Spyder actually made its driving debut a couple days earlier on a closed road in Monterey. The company kept the drive a secret, though produced a nice video of their own that really shows off how the car sounds under its own power. Added after the jump.

Such an amazing car. Although, what happened to the cannon looking air intakes on the back? I liked those.

you guys are really complaining about the exhaust note?? I'll be more then happy to gas it past you while you're driving your hyundai making fun of the way my Porsche sounds.

Granted I won't be driving one anytime soon if ever...

seriously, flat-8 vs.... what.. lmao. nothing :)

I love the raspy unfiltered exhaust note.

All low-displacement high revving flat plane crank V8's sound as raspy as that anyway.

Thank god those wheel "covers" were removed.

      This car is just wonderful.

I don't remember if the specs mentioned any distance/movement on electric alone or not.
Interesting that to move it at all, seems the ICE must be running - from these two vids anyway.

It does not matter what it sounds like at all.
If Porsche can deliver this car with the specs promised then it is unrivaled by anything else current or prior in its ability to tap so much power and so much efficiency in the same vehicle.

In any event - they list it as a 500+ hp ICE in there - I doubt it is going to sound like anything but a monster when it gets going.

        @spin

Well... that's the catch isn't it.
If Porsche was playing games with its claims and those figures only work if going down a hill in neutral or only if you start with a full battery and drive a total of no more than 17 miles - 16 of those being on full EM power then that is a different story.
It still might be very nice but not nearly as revolutionary.

        Only time will tell.

        It is a lightweight supposedly.
And I am sure it is very slippery too.
So - if the ICE can shut down some cylinders or perhaps even adjust its cycle then perhaps it can do it.

A car does not need a lot of power to overcome friction and maintain speed on the flat.

Relax guys, this is still basically a concept car. I'm sure it still has a long way to go until it is finalized.

Porsche is really showing their hand.

      what an amazing leap forward.

      My dream car.

The sound is not really decisive in this prototype/preproduction model. Maybe the car cant even go faster than 50mph now. It is just a moving showcase.
But i bet that the production model will be able to take on cars around the 599GTO and Lamborghini Lp640... i just hope for a better front. the pics are awesome, but from the video the front is cool, but not as much as the rear and side.
