2011 BMW 120i Performance Unlimited – Click above for high-res image

Typically, JDM-only models are made by Japanese automakers. Someone apparently forgot to tell BMW, however, as the German automaker has just launched the third in a recent line of Nippon-specific special editions.

Following in the footsteps of the X6 Performance Unlimited and the Mini Savile Row comes the new 120i Performance Unlimited. The special 1-Series comes equipped with the 170-horsepower 2.0-liter four with a six-speed automatic and a variety of M-Sport components, from bumper caps and and a blacked-out grille to a set of 18-inch split-five-spoke alloys and carbon fiber spoiler and mirror housings.

The cabin is similarly decked out in M-Sport extras, like sport seats, leather-covered steering wheel and shift lever and aluminum pedals. Exterior colors are limited to blue or white, and only 30 examples will be built. If you want to get your hands on one, first of all, you'll have to relocate to Japan and then stand in line with ¥4,350,000 (about $50,300).

      Ooooo...I'm so jealous :-/ [sarcasm]

      For an 'unlimited' edition it sure has quite a few finite elements - 2 colors, 30 vehicles only, 1 rather small motor.

      I wonder what the MPG is on the 120i, might be worth it if it was under $30k.

      I was curious to see what else you posted after your racist comments on the 370Z post and yeah, your posts are worthless elsewhere as well. Get off of Autoblog.

      over $50k for an underpowered "sport car". bmw has become a classic example of narcisistic behavior gone too far.

      If I lived in Japan, why would I want this? They can't get 135i there?
        • 4 Years Ago
        More like they can't use the 135 there. Japan isn't all Evos, Supras, and Zs. It's all tiny kei-cars that make thel new Mini feel like a Suburban

        "If I lived in Japan, why would I want this? They can't get 135i there?"

        Because there are many countries in the world where:

        a) Fuel is at least double the price it is in America;
        b) Annual registrations are based on engine capacity and carbon dioxide emissions;
        c) Company car tax liabilities ar based on engine capacity and carbon dioxide emissions.

        According to the BMW Japan site, the 135i starts at ¥5,323,810 which directly converts to $61,984. The 120i is more than 10 grand cheaper.

        Also, the 128 doesn't look like it's available in Japan from the site.

        Seriously, worse power to weight than a golf and twice the cost? So people will lease anything to have that badge to whore

        its a tax thing

        anything over 2L falls under the supercar gas guzzler tax

      Skip all the "Performance Unlimited" pieces, just send over the 120i and I'll become a 1-series believer. (Always wanted the 1 w/a I4, not just a shrunk down 3 series)

        How about the 123d?
        It's a diesel 2.0 liter engine that makes like 198 horsepower and 320 ft. lbs of torque and gets fantastic milage.

      That car is so ugly. People actually bought it.....pfft!

      From the land of the rising sun comes this creation from a company who thinks the sun shines out of it's .....
      In realtity a lot of us want a 4 cyl BMW again especially if it's Compact, Sport & Light or CSL.
      Not sure the above meets any of this apart from being Compact.

      [In German]

      BMW Exec: Ok guys, here's what we're gonna do to boost sales in the third quarter . We'll make a limited run of the 1-Series. Hmmm...Frank? How many times have you cheated on your wife?

      Frank: Uhhh...I think somewhere around 30 times.

      BMW Exec: Great! 30 it is! We'll make 30 of them and we'll limit them to ahhhh...2 colors! Stephen, what's your favorite color?

      Stephen: Hmmm...Blue?

      BMW Exec: Great....Blue! And Johan, what's your's?!

      Johan: White!

      BMW Exec: Great! Blue and White! Now all we have to do is sprinkle the car with M-badges and other "performance-looking" trinkets, add NO actual performance, and slap a $50k price on it! We'll make boat-loads of cash!

      Can't believe people gave a green light to this design. Really, looks something from 2001. (horrible headlights/headlights, dull body, etc...)

      Us Japanese may have been fooled by the Honda CR-Z, Insight, and the Lexus HS..... but there is no way in heck that we are dumb enough to fall for this gimmick.
