These are the cars that have passed all the on-track testing at the Michigan International Speedway this summer and those that will now move into the Validation Stage at the Argonne National Lab next month. As you can see, X-Tracer has joined Edison2 as a team with no one but themselves to beat, which means that these two teams are just a few in-lab tests and one more road event away from earning the $2.5 million or $5 million prize money, respectively, on September 16 in Washington, D.C.

For the other teams, results from the lab tests, as well as the standings from the combined performance and efficiency event, which will be used as a tiebreaker, will determine the winners. For teams fighting against themselves, all that's required to win now is to meet the X-Prize's minimum targets. Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE Concludes On Track Competition Events; Announces Teams Advancing to the Validation Stage

BROOKLYN, MICH. (July 27, 2010) -- The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, a $10 million competition to inspire a new generation of super fuel efficient vehicles, announced today the Finalist teams who have survived all on-track testing at Michigan International Speedway (MIS), and who now move into a Validation stage before prize money will be awarded this September.

What began as a field of 136 vehicles from 111 teams has now been narrowed to an elite group of nine vehicles from just seven teams that have proven they can meet the strictest requirements of this competition, including the ability to achieve at least 90MPGe on the way toward the ultimate 100 MPGe requirement and to survive grueling dynamic safety and range tests. The teams represent a wide variety of backgrounds that include emerging start ups, entrepreneurs and universities from around the world. All have proven that they can more than handle a variety of very difficult real-world scenarios.

Finalists were required to pass a repeat of technical inspections and on-track Efficiency, Range and Dynamic Safety events conducted by the competition's technical team and auto test engineers from partner Consumer Reports.

A Combined Performance and Efficiency Event will take place at Michigan International Speedway today to serve as the tie-breaker for the Alternative Class vehicles with side-by-side seating that go on to pass Validation Stage testing.

Tata Motors (Coventry, UK) was unable to present their Indica Vista EVX vehicle for the Range Test due to a technical issue. Although they will not be advancing, Tata will demonstrate their vehicle in tomorrow's Combined Performance and Efficiency Event, as will Amp's amp'd Sky (Cincinnati, OH), Commuter Cars' Tango (Spokane, WA), Spira's Spira4u (Carrollton, IL/Banglamung, Thailand), and Western Washington University's Viking 45 (Bellingham, WA).

Validation is the final technical event in the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE. Finalists in both the Mainstream and Alternative classes will undergo dynamometer testing under controlled laboratory conditions at Argonne National Lab facilities. The car in each class that exceeds 100 MPGe, meets the emissions and performance requirements, and, in the case of a tie, completes the Combined Performance and Efficiency challenge with the fastest time, will win. The $10 millionprize purse will be presented at an Award Ceremony on September 16, in Washington, D.C.

      Maybe x prize will recognize that kind of energy that is what the world should reward cooperation not just cut throat competition look what happened to all the big companies with the wrong atitude.

      What happened to all those "Plug in Prius" that get 150 mpg! Shows what a joke all those are. They are like 150 mpg till the first gallon of gas and the $10,000 worth of batteries completely depleted.

      Diesels would have a hard time competing here because they must a Production of less than 200 grams/mile CO2 emissions (measured well-to-wheel).

      This competition may have made sense 5-10 years ago, but since it was ignored by the major manufacturers it has become a sad joke. In the era of the Volt, Tesla, Leaf, e-Tron's etc these are just irrelevant hobby projects.

      This has to be the Aperta's last gasp before they fold up and lose all their investors money.

      I'm not a huge fan of "alternatively powered" cars. I think a lot of people latch onto the idea without understanding the true costs and benefits of the technology. People instinctively shy away from diesel technology, while it has demonstrated tried and true success on the track and on the streets.

      That said, the X-prize contest is very, very cool and it is exciting to watch these teams get closer to the finish line.

        And no one has come out with a diesel hybrid yet either which is crazy. A diesel Prius or TDI hybrid would easily blow away many of the electric contenders

        A diesel hybrid may be more fuel efficient than a traditional gas hybrid, but it's overly expensive to produce, which makes it an even less popular choice among the competitors, since it appears as though none of them have any significant backing/funding.

        For the mainstream, people are already complaining about the premiums tacked onto gasoline hybrids; adding an additional premium by involving a diesel engine is just going to make people complain more.
