The three-year-long wait for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt's official U.S. price tag will finally be over in less than 24 hours. At the Plug-In 2010 Conference in San Jose, California on Tuesday, GM VP of Marketing Joel Ewanick will announce pricing details and the ordering process for the Volt. Following the announcement, there will be a live online webchat with Volt Marketing Director Tony DiSalle.

MEDIA ADVISORY: Chevrolet to Provide Details on Volt Pricing, Ordering Process

DETROIT – On Tues., July 27 at 12:00 p.m. ET, Joel Ewanick, vice president of U.S. marketing – General Motors Co., will announce pricing and ordering details for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt at the Plug-In 2010 conference in San Jose, Calif. Deliveries of the Volt will begin later this year at participating Chevrolet dealers in launch markets.

A press release providing full details on the order process and pricing will go live on media.gm.com at 12:00 p.m. ET.

      How does this hype continue? The readers of this blog are some of the most informed in the world about transportation and cars.

      When gas was $2/gal the American people demanded huge SUV's and the US manufacturers were happy to build and sell them. This was less than a good idea as it radically accelerated the end of the petroleum era. Now Americans are demanding electric and hybrids and the same companies are happy to build and sell them.

      Please ponder the amount of copper, aluminum, gallium, selenium, iron, ..., minerals needed to build the new National Smart Grid. Then consider there are 145 nations - now building National Smart Grids.

      Please ponder the amount of copper, aluminum, gallium, selenium, iron, ..., minerals needed to build the massive solar arrays. Then consider that the world has manufactured and installed Gw's of solar panels already and projections are calling for 10,000 times the current amount.

      Please ponder the amount of copper, aluminum, gallium, selenium, iron, ..., minerals needed to build the personal electronics for the emerging markets in India, China, Russia, south American and Africa nations.

      Please ponder the amount of copper, aluminum, gallium, selenium, iron, ..., minerals needed to build an EV car. Then consider that there are 2 billion vehicles on the planet with projections of 3 billion by 2020. Life expectancy of a car is 6-7 years, so over 100 years that is 42 billion cars. In the extremely unlikely event we can raise the recycling of EV batteries up to something close to 90% (today it is less than 20%), there is still a loss of 10% per 7 year cycle.

      Without mining the minerals of Mars, the concept of manufacturing more than a few hundred million EV cars is ridiculous. EV's are not sustainable, therefore they are not Green. They are not our future. Hybrids are little better with 2 separate systems.

      Expand the concept of Peak Oil and start thinking about Peak Everything.

      You guys should like this. The future is all about power - raw power from clean diesel and ultimately biodiesel. It is the only future that is sustainable - though mining the minerals of Mars and the planets will certainly come into play one day.

        The development and manufacturing costs were not simply to add an electric mode to an existing gasser.

        This is about the same size as a Malibu, which starts in the $20s, so add 15% for Hybrid, and the base model should eventually sticker as low as $24,995.

        However, high initial demand means GM can take a little profit, so assume all launch models will be feature-heavy with uplevel trim, stickering at $30-35k.

        @Temple: Fundamentally, this is a secondary commuter car which can take a few passengers on a short lunch run, staying within the 40-mile daily range. Squeezing 5 people and more stuff isn't part of the design.

        Given how empty most trunks are, they're largely wasted space, so having "only" 10 cu ft isn't a big deal. Well-shaped, I can get away with using less than 5 on a normal basis, and that's if I'm hitting the driving range on the way home from work.

        If the Volt actually needs to carry something, then you treat it as a 3-door wagon with fold-down rear seats - highly usable and functional for those rare cases when you need to move a bike or whatever.

        People who need to move 5 people and a lot of cargo any significant distance simply aren't the target, so those cargo limitations doen't matter. Chevy sells other cars for those people.

        I find the notion of a Mazda 5-ish 3-row Volt variant to be very odd - I'm not sure how the extra weight and drag are going to work if GM still intends to have a 40-mile range.

        We shouldn't expect this car to be comparable to size of the Malibu. Space utilization is not a forte of these PHEVs, this car needs to carry around a 4-cylinder engine, electric motors, 400lbs of batteries, as well as a standard gas tank. Which is why the Volt has a puny trunk space that is a mere 10 cubic feet large, smaller then even a Chevy Aveo (which has 12.4). Also the Volt can't seat 5-people, so in interior volume its even less then a Cruze, much less a Malibu. The reason this is that the massive T-shaped 16kwh li-ion battery that stands as the centerpiece of the Volt intrudes on rear passenger seat leaving only room for 4 people. This is not going to be a roomy car.

        Again, that's not a bad thing. For those that need space GM is expected to launch a Volt MPV5, which as the name suggests will be able to seat 5 people:

      Just freeking start selling the damn things already, this way they can go ahead and NOT sell well, then the attention will die off and eventually GM will remove the Volt from its line-up.

      I say it's going to be around 30k +, then they'll have some huge tax break to offset the cost for the consumer making the car more affordable.

      I would imagine roughly $38K - plus sales tax, so roughly $40-41K in total. And then claim the tax credit early in the year following that in which the vehicle was purchased.

      They can play it safe and go for the 30s and get it out to people, or they can shoot for a profit and make it 40k and up.

        Even if they price it at $50k GM will still lose money on the Volt. Reason #1 to get the IPO out as fast as possible and let the execs cash in before the debt starts piling up again.

        You take away China and a bit of South America and GM is bankrupt again in less than a year.

      here's an idea GM let me lease a $44k Buick Enclave for $350 a month. Who knows what the residual is going to be on the Volt in a few years? Can't see how they will make money on this lease.

      Who cares how much it costs. Its just going to be more GM junk that is unreliable, ugly and has bad resale. Not only that, if anyone thinks this is going to change the automotive industry you're mistaken. Picture all of your loser neighbors plugging cars in at night. Ever heard of rolling blackouts? Lets put more pressure on the power grid that cant keep up even now. Good job GM. Anyone who buys one of these car should go see a doctor and have their head examined. Electric cars are NOT the way to go!! And yes I do know most automaker are going to hop on the EV bandwagon, I still believe its not the way to go.

        @Sam. It will use a smart charger to charge at night when there is plenty of spare grid capacity. If every car was electric then it might be an issue, but that's not likely to happen any time soon.

        Hey Killgmnow...I dont know what post you are talking about but no where in my post did I ever say that someone else designed the Volt. I said that the government is pushing for this technology and every manufacturer will be looking at producing this technology. Funny you say I should know about cars before I spout off...I actually work in sales and have been here for over 15 years so you might say I do know a thing or two. As far as resale value goes GM has had better resale value than most competitors in the last few years. In the past your comments would have been true but things are different now and NO you don't have a clue as to what you are talking about. Mr. "I work in automotive" whatever that means...you a wrench or something?? Have fun in your behind the scenes playground.
