BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé concept – Click above to watch video walkaround after the jump

As a testament to its success in starting the four-door coupe movement, the Mercedes-Benz CLS is nigh on its second version, yet competitors have only recently begun to crowd the room. With the Audi A7 about to gain membership in the club, BMW couldn't hang back, so it has reportedly slapped a sales date on the 6 Series Gran Coupe concept: it'll be here in 2012.

Rumored for the summer of 2012 by German publication Automobilwoche, that puts its introduction a year behind the next-generation 6 Series. Engines are said to be a mix of gas and diesel, and BMW evidently spoke of a potential hybrid application. Perhaps most importantly, design cues such as the frameless doors and LED lighting will be carried into production. Those trick exhaust tips, however, not likely. Follow the jump for a video walkaround of the exterior and check out our high-res gallery below for a refresher.

      Love it. Just beautiful.

Please please please BMW - make it available with a manual.

BMW's numbering system really means nothing these days.
A "1" series with 2 doors? A "6" series with 4 doors? Get it together.

BMW abandoned their engineering-based nomenclature over a decade ago, with the 2-door 3-er "is" model, followed by the dual naming of the 323 & 325 for the same displacement engine.

At that point, things like the X5 were merely a matter of time.

yes, starting the 4-door coupe movement, and completely changing Webster's definition of the word "coupe".

If it comes out this thing is going to sell like hot cakes all around the world. I have a feeling that the next 7 will be based on its design language. its soooo simple yet elegant lets hope they keep it original. By the way does anyone know when the next x5 is coming out?

It may be redundant model (next to 5 or 7 series) but in it's own...OH MY GOD. It's so elegant, not too masculine but you can tell just by looking at it standing, that it's still so fast. It's like one of those Marlin fishes.

And it's so much better looking than A7 and CLS. But i would advise BMW to not go down Audi's route and try to have all it's cars look the same

Another flop of the redo of the 6 series. Should look into ideas from the classic design of the early 635 csi or the Fisker

At least the Passat CC is a bit more than a Passat with a low roof...
i agree with catchmyshadow , there is nothing coupe-like about this car.
It looks good but why is BMW fooling us? It isn`t a Coupe imho, it is a Sedan, just a bit more elegant.

      An open letter to BMW:

      BMW,
Have you lost your way? It was only 10 years ago and you were on top of your game, the 3, 5 and 7 lead there respected class and everyone chased you on the track. Now look what has happened, design debauchery, unclear vision of the brand, iDrive. You have now become GM circa 1999, your answering questions no one is asking. I know what you tried to do with the X6, you wanted to create a new "class" of vehicle like the CLS did when it came out and it would have worked.......12 years ago. Now you offer vehicles that cannibalize the sales of your core. What is the purpose of a 4dr 6 series? compete with the 5 series Gran Turismo? Well their not quite the same I realize that but then what is the point of the Gran Turismo when I could buy the wagon? Why do I have so many choices when I drive the M5. Obviously I bought it so I could go fast all the time, who needs to slow that down? MPG? If I cared about MPG I would have got the diesel version.
Look I realize that sales are very good right now, but the same can be said about Lexus and you don't want to be compared to Lexus do you?
The only thing I ask is, please don't meddle with the M3, it's our last hope and our only tie to the BMW we loved from the past.

      Thanks,

      P.S. keep Mini, mini

I love the design of this concept and hope that newer bmw models would be based on it.

      Dictionary.com Definition of "Coupe"
      Current:
      –noun
      1.
Also, coupé. a closed, two-door car shorter than a sedan of the same model.

      Origin:
      1.
a short, four-wheeled, closed carriage, usually with a single seat for two passengers and an outside seat for the driver.

      -----------------

How on earth is this a COUPE of any sort?

It doesn't have shorter length or size than all but the monstrous 7-series.
      It doesn't have 2 doors.

The word "Gran" is an romance-language variant of "Grand", meaning large or opulent.

Gran Coupe is an OXYMORON. Just like "4-door coupe" is. Gran means bigger, Coupe means SMALLER and pared down, with just the minimum size needed.

Why not just call it the tiny giant?

The thing is ridiculous in pretty much every aspect. What is so wrong with just properly re-freshing the 6-series GT Coupe... that actually DOES have 2 doors? Maybe give THAT car the combo liftback hatch.

It is a fastback or sleek-roof sport sedan. It is not a coupe. Nor is the A7 Sportback, or the A5 Sportback, nor is the 5-series GT, or the X6, ZDX, CrossTour, CLS, or any of the others.

Besides this segment not actually ever being coupes, I really like this design. One of the better looking "flagships" from BMW. Although it makes the 7-series look too boxy and old.

The CLS, A7, and now this make for a very sexy luxury segment. Add upper class models like Quattroporte and Rapide and you've got a good looking lineup. I just have a soft spot for luxury "coupes" I guess.

Lets all just pretend the Panamera never happened though...
