As corporate fleets across the globe have slowly transformed into a paradise for green cars, finding a company that hasn't revamped at least a portion of its vehicles over to greener technology is becoming harder and harder. Though AT&T would not be considered pioneers in the drive towards greener fleets, the company's recent commitment to cleaner vehicles shows that it's dedicated to cleaning up its act fast.

In March 2009, AT&T announced its $565 million grand plan to replace 15,000 of its 75,900 fleet vehicles with alternative fuel models by 2018. Now, AT&T has hit its first milestone by deploying its 2,000th alternative fuel vehicle and 1,500th compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle. AT&T already lays claim to one of the largest CNG-powered fleets in the U.S., but future plans call for the addition of 8,000 more within the next five years. If Chrysler can act fast, it could grab a big chunk of that. Follow the jump for more info regarding AT&T's future plans to green-up its vehicles.

PRESS RELEASE

AT&T Rolls Out Its 2,000th Alternative Fuel Vehicle and 1,500th Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle in Its Corporate Fleet

Milestones Part of 10-Year, $565 Million Plan to Deploy Cleaner Fleet Vehicles

AT&T today announced the deployment of the 2,000th alternative fuel vehicle and 1,500th compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle in its corporate vehicle fleet, giving it one of the largest CNG vehicle fleets in the U.S. These milestones are part of a $565 million planned investment announced in March 2009 to replace more than 15,000 fleet vehicles with alternative fuel models through 2018. Currently, the AT&T corporate fleet includes more than 75,900 vehicles.

AT&T anticipates purchasing approximately 8,000 CNG vehicles over a five-year span, at an anticipated cost of $350 million. AT&T expects to spend an additional $215 million through 2018 to replace 7,100 fleet passenger cars with alternative fuel models. According to the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), AT&T's alternative fuel vehicle initiative will:
  • Save 49 million gallons of gasoline over the 10-year deployment period.
  • Reduce carbon emissions by 211,000 metric tons– the greenhouse gas equivalent of removing 147,929 passenger vehicles from the road for one year.
"The deployment of our 2,000th alternative fuel vehicle is a significant milestone in an ongoing effort to reduce our dependence on foreign oil," said Jerome Webber, vice president, AT&T Fleet Operations. "To continue making progress, we are working with our suppliers and local municipalities to encourage the expansion of support infrastructure, which would allow the introduction of more fuel efficient vehicles in communities around the U.S.," added Webber.
