Mercedes-Benz S-Class spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

Mercedes-Benz has a lot on its plate at the moment. In addition to the spy shots we've seen of the next-generation GL, ML, SLK and C-Class Coupe, our men in the trees have spotted this S-Class mule out roaming the streets, giving us a glimpse at what the all-new flagship Benz will have in store when it launches in the next few years.

Up front, it appears that the headlamps have been reduced in size and our spies indicate that full-LED units will be in place for the 2012 model year. Additionally, the front grille appears larger, mimicking what we've seen in the F700 concept car. Under the hood, we expect a full range of new engines, including gasoline, diesel and hybrid variations, keeping the big S-Class competitive with what the rest of the luxury barges coming to market in the next few years.

We fully expect to see more spy shots of the new S-Class as development continues, so stay tuned. As for the official reveal, look for that to happen sometime in 2011 with production models hitting the road in 2012.

        @Flashpoint

        So you were contemplating trading in your car for one with LED's... for that reason alone? Ummm.... ok?

        • 4 Years Ago
        I have a 2007 S-class and I am going to wait for the 2012 to come out, rather than just trade in for the 2010 for the LED lighting.

        Hopefully, multicontour massage chairs will be standard in the 2012. They're gonna have to work pretty hard to one up themselves. The S550 was the perfect car and will be for the next 10 years. Hopefully the 2012 will get better mpg.

        LED headlights isn't really a matter of "playing catch-up"; it's a natural progression in headlight technology. The newest generation of white LEDs can actually produce more lumens per watt than Xenon lights, and the efficiency levels are continuing to improve. Reducing wattage requirements on a car is a small but still important way of improving fuel economy, or at the very least, reclaiming power the auto manufacturers can repurpose for running more electricals.

      I'm hoping it has a similar front-end to the F700, if it does that'd be awesome. Hope those fogs are only on the mule though...

      I'm not too thrilled with them extending those quad round fog lamps over from the E-Class. They look cheap to me, but I can't exactly pinpoint why.

      Didn't they JUST update the S this year?
      This prolly won't be out till 2014.

      I think that after seeing the photos of the new CLS and knowing that the CLS is intended to represent a new design structure for MBs that they are replicating design cues from the Ocean Drive Concept much more that the F700 in all likely hood. Most prominent in the new headlamps.

      Someone wondered why they would go for a new look when they just updated the S for 2011. Because this is a total redesign. They have shortened the cycle to 6 years now.

      I am curious if they really take cues from F700 on this redesign....I wish they would. Vertical headlamps! Also, if they phase out Maybach surely they would need to stun the public with S Class design! Sonderclasse of the future!

      I really hope they shrink the rear wheel arches. Terrible on the S and the E-coupe.
