2012 Mercedes-Benz GL spy shots – Click above for high-res image gallery

The Mercedes-Benz GL sport-ute may have received a slight refresh for the 2010 model year, but the team in Stuttgart is already prepping the next-generation GL, and our spies have caught an early test mule roaming the streets. The overall shape of the seven-passenger SUV hasn't changed much, but we can see that the front fascia has been smoothed out quite a bit, even in these early development stages.

The new GL will ride on a stretched version of the next-generation ML crossover platform, and it will share the majority of its technological data with the smaller ML, as well. In true Mercedes-Benz fashion, we expect a full range of gasoline and diesel engines to be available, though no official word has been given on exactly what will be under the hood when the GL launches. For now, check out the attached gallery to see the GL mule out on the road.

Is this the stretched Dodge Magnum version of the Mercedes ML derivative of the new Jeep Grand Cherokee?

As I understand what occurred, Daimler recognized Jeep's prowess in off road vehicles, and assigned the Jeep engineering department the lead but not exclusive responsibility in designing this new generation of Jeep and Mercedes competent off-road SUVs.

What will be the principal differences, besides the obscene price tag, the obvious luxe touches, and the mandatory Euro diesel offering?

If that's so then how do you explain the G-Wagen?

I'd like to know how much Jeep is under that disguise? What started under The New Chrysler Corporation, continued under Daimler,Cerebus, The US Government and Fiat has been released this month as a JEEP Grand Cherokee. Why would Daimler wait so long to release this vehicle? It's still not available. Daimler has had continuity while Chrysler has had anything but. If there is any Jeep underneath I will be surprised. For Chrysler Jeep has been a great test bed. 4.7 L V-8, 3.7 L V-6, Pentastar 3.6 L V-6 were all used first in Jeeps before any other Chrysler product.

The ML is not a crossover. Like all Mercedes SUVs, it is a real truck.

I would think that the next GL550 or equivalent would get the new twin turbo 4.7 liter v8. Reflash the ECU to 500+hp...shweeeet.

@Jared, the Off Road Package is still available but only by special order, so it's not listed among the normally available options.

I like the look of the current GL. I don't like the fact that they discontinued the offroad option (no more available two-speed transfer case) because I actually do take my SUV offroad. Oh well, I can't afford $70k for a new truck, so it is a moot point anyways.

How about "Mercedes to get rid of SUVs".
