Buyers in the New York metropolitan area and Austin, Texas have now been added to those that will have first crack at the Chevrolet Volt when it goes on sale late this year. Austin and New York City will be first with the rest of New York State, New Jersey, Connecticut and Texas joining Michigan, Washington DC and California in early 2011.
General Motors is focusing initial availability on regions that it feels are best prepared to deal with a plug-in vehicle in order to show off the Volt's capabilities with maximum effect. Since initial volumes will be limited, an immediate national roll-out would likely find dealers with few cars to sell.
Over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, Chevrolet will conduct a 1,776 "freedom drive" with the Volt meant to demonstrate its all-purpose capability. Unlike the Tesla Roadster that took three weeks to drive from Los Angeles to Detroit early this year, the Volt drive will only take four days starting today.
