During a live video webchat this afternoon, Tony DiSalle, marketing director for the Chevrolet Volt, announced the production volumes for the first two years. General Motors plans to build 10,000 Volts by the end of the 2011 calendar year, with another 30,000 units coming in 2012. There will be a relatively slow production ramp up during the first year as the automaker learns to build the Volt as well as well as picking up lessons from cars in the field.

Chevrolet dealers will have to meet some minimum qualifications in order to sell the Volt. For instance, every dealer authorized to sell the Volt will have to maintain at least one demonstrator vehicle in stock so that potential customers can test drive it. Those same dealers will also have to install a 240 volt home charging station so that the cars have a full battery and customers can try it out. Beyond the dealers that sell Volts in the initial retail markets, GM will also assign dealers in other parts of the country to service the Volt if needed.

Unlike the Nissan Leaf, customers will not have to get pre-qualified to buy a Volt by having access to 240 volt home charging. Anyone can walk into a Volt authorized dealer and buy one (assuming they have the money!) even if they live in an apartment. Of course, getting the most out of a Volt will require access to a plug, but that is the customers' choice.

      When will they release this dang car. The problem with GM is they have these cars and take forever to release them so when they are released im so sick of them i dont care. The Camaro should have been released when transformers 1 was out instead they waited till the SEQUEL came out. They've been talking about this Volt since the bankruptcy.

        Man, I don't understand where this warping of time comes from.

        Cars take time to develop, you can't just annouce a car one day and have production models out in a few months. Not one car company does that, none.

        Typically, the cycle of development from concept to production is close to 3yrs. You can be sure that as soon as the new generation of Camry, Accord, Fusion, Malibu, Altima etc. is one sale, they start working on the next-gen model even though that model is years off.

        Both the Camaro and Volt moved from concept to production in about that 3yr timeframe, pretty much average for the industry.

        You can search through AB and see when both vehicles were annouced as concepts and when they started production and see the timeline yourself.

        Since the Volt was first announced they stated that they were going for a late 2010 on-sale date. It's never wavered from that even during GM's bankruptcy.

      Sounds good. Now lets see what the real demand will be.

      I think a slow start is a VERY smart thing to do. The last think anyone wants it some weird part fails and then GM has to issue a massive recall... just look at the Toyota/Lexus recall from earlier today. Better off start slow, make sure they are built right, and slowly boost volume after that.

        personally i think a 5th brand would be pretty cool
        a brand that exclusively sells electric/ diesel and hybrid cars and trucks.

        ^ A while back I would have thought having a separate hybrid-only or EV-only brand would be a smart thing to do, but honestly I see that at some point in the future pretty much all cars are going to have some level of hybrid powertain or simply be straight-up EVs.

        10k & 30k are very much in the realm of possibility. 750 growing to 2,500 per month says they expect sub-Corvette numbers to start, eventually becoming the smallest-selling volume sedan in the fleet.

        Still, if GM is going to move 30,000 Volts, perhaps that's enough to be 5th brand? (*kidding*)

        Exactly right, Hazdaz - eventually, GM is going to (i.e. *should*) sell Buick and Caddy hybrids, so it makes no sense to split them off.

        I really hope to see the Converj in 2012.

        ... except, after Geo (post-Saturn, mind you), GM created HUMMER and killed Oldsmobile.

        So maybe instead of merely saying "twice", you should say: "That's a mistake GM won't make a fourth time".

        If you want to count Pontiac, it'd be "a fifth time".

      Last fall GM was talking about 60,000 Volts for 2012.

      This spring it was "up to 50,000 depending on demand"

      Now it's 30,000.

      And there's a year and a half yet to aim lower still.

        If Obama raises the gas tax by a buck a gallon, GM could sell 100,000 Volts.

        The Volt would be an only slightly less irrational purchase at $125/barrel.

        Where those predictions went wrong was the expectation of full employment and unlimited credit to make irrational purchases. Which has been clearly false for two and a half years now and with the anti-business party running DC will remain so for the foreseeable future

      I'm buying one as soon as it's available in my area. This would be my first American car (previously Honda, Mercedes, Lexus).

      Smart way to go , to start out slow and watch what bad things will happen to the few volts on the road, though I think GM got it pretty work out I bet.Any ways I guess it is Better to have a 5,000 volt recall then a 45,000 volt recall ;). GM is being very smart abot this, I hope the volt leads to more EV's in the future so we can wing ourselfs off opec's greed! Someone should tell opec be apart of the change or be outdated and loose..lol I sure won't cry when opec feels the pain. The EV will be the sword though opecs heart. I know opec and oil will be around for many many years to come but demand will never be like it was before opec got greedy and jack up gas prices

        Sorry to interrupt a good rant, but OPEC has nothing to do with gas prices directly. They sell oil, not gasoilne.

        Additionally, OPEC has not wielded the power that they once had, they have been trying for quite a while now to get their members to agree on production decreases to draw up the prices. But, they've had a hard time getting all members to agree to a decrease. There is some infighting amongst OPEC nations. As such, supply has kept up pretty well with demand and prices have stayed relatively stable lately.

        The increase in oil prices a few years back had little to do with OPEC as well, it was traders that caused much of that, OPEC was just a lucky benefactor of the price increase(as were any other oil companies).

      Just upgraded the electrical service out to my garage so I made sure that I had enough to allow for charging one of these or something like it.

        Jei, not true, the only difference is the length of charging time.
        240v = 4hours
        120v = 8hours
        You sleep at least 6 hours per night right?

        Wouldn't it be almost pointless to even consider the Volt if you don't have access to a dedicated 240V electrical service?

        And if a Volt owner never charges his car using the 240V system, won't that degrade the overall performance of the batteries? Anyone buy a Volt that wasn't recharged using 240V power might be buying a lemon, right?

      I have had the opportunity to see one of the VOLTS in person. This is one super technology machine, and I wish I will be able to own one. Aside from the styling which looks awsome, the total operations of the vehicle is truly amazing. Good for GM, I really believe this is going to be a grand slam for them!!!

      Wondered if marketing and sales is thinking this thru properly. Most homes have 110 and 220. 220 runs your range and dryer and rewiring your home would be expensive. Why haven't they given it a thought of using 110 only. 110 is more commonly used thru the US and would be available almost everywhere. Hell, even in Fairbanks Ak they have plug ins at the store to plug in your headbolt heater when it's minus 60 degreesF. How is this type vehicle graded for cold weather areas, such as Alaska? What about traveling, are there provisions for plugging in when you get to a hotel or somewhere 100 miles from home?

        You can charge it off 220V or 110V, whichever you like. It will charge 4x as fast on 220V because 220V has twice as much voltage and twice the amperage. So 220V is the preferred solution if you have it.

        Carry the 110V travel charger and you'll be able to charge at least a little at any place you go that has 110V.

        Why would electrical provisions matter when you're traveling? The Volt is an EREV, and would run off the gas engine (generator) if there's not enough juice in the batteries.

        As for using 110 only ... the concept of amperage must be lost upon you.

        Actually, homes having at least one 220V outlet (for their dryer) is in a good position to recharge their Volt. The 220V rating is an average and is within a safe tolerance for 240V recharging service. All the home owner would need is the special receptacle (wall outlet) for that higher-voltage service to be ready for the Volt.

        The only long-term issue I worry about is whether the home's electrical service is in good condition and if it is already overloaded by other devices & equipment from various upgrades.
