Jeff Zwart qualifies at Pikes Peak – Click above to watch the video after the jump

Life is filled with a number of paralyzing injustices. Chief among them is the fact that, by and large, the vast majority of humanity will never get to ride shotgun with Jeff Zwart as he raises hell on Pikes Peak with his Porsche 911 Cup racer. That's a damn shame, too. Zwart just managed to set the Time Attack 2wd Class record with a staggering 11:31.095, bending the laws of physics, time and space to his very will in the process.

Sadly, Zwart only has so much time on his hands, and while we're sure he's a nice enough guy, he's got better things to do than ferry the common man up and down the mountain for the rest of his dying days. Fortunately for us, there's Will Roegge and his continually mind-melting video abilities. Roegge was quick enough to throw a camera in Zwart's cockpit as he ran a qualifying run up the mountain this year and has shared the footage with the world at large. Three words: stay on target.

Hit the jump to see the gooey goodness for yourself.

Perhaps Mini would like to join?

I feel like if you combined Jeff's driving style on asphalt and Rhys' on dirt, you'd be twice as fast.

Rhys loses a lot of time drifting on asphalt, and Jeff loses a lot of speed by trying to apex every dirt corner. I think Jeff will be able to break his own record by a ton next year when it's all paved over.

I'm actually surprised none of the WRC competitors have ever entered the unlimited class and cleaned house. Can you imagine Loeb taking that C4 up the mountain as fast as he completes some of the WRC stages?

I agree. But remember in a 911 you don't want to get the tail out too much on dirt as it may not stop coming around. There was one point at the beginning of the dirt section where he almost stopped the car because it was coming around too fast. But I definitely agree that if Rhys and Jeff were to mate they'd make an insane child.

      Not going to lie.

I was scared just watching the video. I could not imagine being *IN* that car!

This is what I imagine what I'm doing whenever I drive up up Big Bear mountain. My imagination out weighs my talent a bit.

Amazing place, I would love to have a go myself, although you could double his time for me. Very good drive. There seems to be a few places where there were wasted 10ths of seconds though. I'm betting he could go quicker. Although he may have been trying to keep it ON the mountain at the same time which is understandable. I still keep going back to the Climb Dance video:

Now THAT is amazing. Even more so now it is 22yrs old!

Wow! Watching that makes me really sad they're paving more and more of the course every year.

Does anybody know what tires he was on? Did I just watch somebody drifting on dirt in a GT3 Cup car on slicks??? That was surreal, some of the craziest driving I've ever seen.

According to the Autoextremist piece (linked in my post below),

"Remarkably, the P Zero tires that Zwart used for his record run were actually wet-weather Pirellis that have been used successfully in Grand-Am Rolex Series GT competition since 2008."

There's also a good write-up on Jeff at today's Autoextremist, in the Fumes column, by Peter De Lorenzo, a former colleague of Jeff's on Pontiac's ad account in the '80s:

      Excellence in the Clouds

And if you're a regular reader of Road & Track, you've seen some of Jeff's great photography there. The AE article includes an interview and some action photos. Jeff's full course time was 11:31.095; he was sixth overall, behind the three Unlimited cars and two Open Wheel class cars. Amazing for a 2007 GT3 Cup car (updated to 2010 specs).

WOW this is a badass video! Also reminds me of the days when Porsche was competing in every possible category. I say that's freaking awesome!
