Terrafugia Transition – Click above for high-res image gallery

Another day, another flying car, right? According to The Daily Telegraph, the FAA has just awarded the Terrafugia Transition an exemption which will allow the 1,440-pound car/aircraft hybrid to fly under a "light sport" designation, even though it hits the scales at a hefty 120 lbs. more than the rules allow. A light sport pilot license only requires 20 hours of seat time – far less than what a full license would demand.

Designed to be a viable piece of transportation that's just as happy in the air as it is on the ground, the Transition comes loaded with all of the safety goodies of your standard economy car – airbags and crumple zones come standard. While Terrafugia hasn't exactly said what kind of top speed the Transition can carry on terra firma, it does say the craft gets around 30 mpg when scooting around town.

Should the weather turn sunny and the skies grow clear, however, the Transition can lower its wings, fire up a rear-mounted propeller and take to the air where it can carry a top speed of around 115 mph with a range of 460 miles. Not too shabby. The little carplane only requires an air strip of around 1/3 of a mile, and with its wings folded, can comfortably fit in any garage. Final MSRP is expected to be around $194,000.

FInally! I was wondering when they would come out with a plane that flies.
I was starting to think that a flying plane would never happen
      • 4 Years Ago
How well do the airbags work when you fall out of the sky because your left wing fell off after it got hit by a shopping cart in the Wal-Mart parking lot?

Pre-flight checks are for losers! Just floor it!

And where the hell is my Hoverboard already?!?!

There wouldn't be a need for air bags in flight because you could just pop the top and bail out with your parachute.

      The future is nigh.

Hey, I have this driving car, I'll sell you for 20k.

That being said, Technology has progressed nicely and so have the regulations and enviromental safety implications.

I hope this gets more refined. Not saying we need more planes.. But we need this tech to develop.

We don't need better planes and cars -- what we need is better trains and boats! Can you imagine "shipping" commercial goods on "trucks"? It'll never work!

"Progress" is just a librul codeword for SOCIALISM and SPREADING THE WEALTH! If you're not with us, YOU'RE AGAINST US!

Seriously Jared, what do you have against innovation and technological development?

"Seriously Jared, what do you have against innovation and technological development?"

Nothing. But a flying car always has been (and will be for the foreseeable future) a bad compromise. It will be both a bad car and a bad plane. This aircraft is a good 50 knots slower than its competitors. Rental cars or loaner cars are available at most FBOs. Why would you want this when you could have a faster plane with longer range, and just rent a car at your destination? And that car will handle better and have better visibility.

Do I want to see progress? Of course, especially in light aircraft where engine technology is woefully behind -- for example, magnetos and carburetors. But this is a waste of time and will not be successful.

        At Jared,

The plane is not significantly slower than its competitors. Its a light sport aircraft class plane and is right in line with both range and speed of others in that class. Not to mention it looks a little goofy but it can be driven and flown.

I'd say do not knock it until you try it. Its technology like this that could lead to sport aircraft/ cars. Who knows, maybe I'll buy one!
No, we don't need this technology to develop. We need better planes. We need better cars. But a flying car will always be a bad car and a bad plane.

A better plane and a rental car (or a loaner from the FBO) will always be a better (and far cheaper) alternative.

      Really officer, I wasn't speeding!
I was just flying too low.
        It's a valid point.
What is the speed limit 3 feet above the ground?

You'd probably make out OK with the speeding ticket - but have your pilot's license pulled and end up with worse fines than the speeding ticket.

No officer, I didn't mean to take off... my floor mat got stuck!
I can't wait to see one of these in a high speed chase. Go, go gadget wings... see ya!
What about heading for the water or the woods? Can helicopters deploy air spikes yet?
Great, just what we need! A vast majority of Americans can't drive to save their gluteous maximus and now they're going to be allowed to fly too So any clown with the funds can buy one of these and be a menace on and above the highway.
lol,I can see it now,the cops are chasing you and you're on the freeway, you spread your wings and...........oh no....... the po po have one too...I do wonder though if one of these can outrun a police helicopter?well,I think they have to make one thats a boat, car and a airplane.......er...maybe a submarine too........that way when you go on vacation you don't need to rent anything....you know what?.....I got way too much time on my hands.....lol

these things should be deeply discounted and all license requirements removed for all "rap music artists" and their publishers at purchase.

in fact these things would make a great subject for a "rap music "song".

ya i'm sure we'll all be able to have one or 2 in the driveway
