We hinted at it in our review, but it's time to make it official. Welcome the newest entrant to the Autoblog Long-Term Garage: the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Street Edition.

So why, with the all-new Jetta right around the corner, would we bring the TDI Cup into the hallowed halls of Autoblog Towers? Simple. We want to get intimate with diesel. Not only do we want to reap the high-mileage benefits of ultra-low sulfur dino-juice, we want to see if something with a TDI badge can, in fact, be an entertaining drive over the long haul.

We explored the Cup's backroad prowess in our review, but how will it fare at the track? Will a new set of tires and wheels make a world of difference? How about some upgraded brake pads? In stock form, does it have what it takes to compete with the latest and greatest in the new fuel-conscious sporty car segment? How will it hold up after thousands of miles, a few road trips and stints across the country with our editors? All these questions and more will be answered over the course of a year.

We'll be keeping you updated on the TDI's progress with weekly and monthly posts, highlighting the finer points and questioning the logic of others. More importantly, we're interested in what you want to know about the Jetta TDI Cup Edition. Tell us in Comments and we'll get cracking.

        You don't need a high revving engine and high horsepower to have fun.

        Well I love my Golf TDI I purchased early in June. Coming from a Miata I have been pleasantly surprised. Good handling and if you want very good acceleration.

        Growing up driving in the 80s I have a different perspective than some here and I am sure those growing up in the 70s or 60s can attest to some of it as well. Today's cars are all fast. Any sub 10 second to 60 is not a slouch. I remember reading an article about my Murano (05) that showed it was faster in acceleration that many cars considered quick in the 60s.

        Throw in the excellent mileage, the quietness of the Golf, and I don't doubt their time with a TDI Jetta is going to be great. You don't need horsepower to drive fast, you need a competent driver and a composed suspension.

        a lot, counting that is has 236 torque (lb-ft) @ 1750 RPM, drive one and you'll feel it

        but that way of thinking is really hard for some people who only think in hp and high redlines...

        I would also like to know autoblog's opinion about car's abilities on mountain road (oh also try to see the fuel consumption)

        No, you don't need a high-revving engine to have fun. But Jetta with a heavy iron block in front and low HP isn't a recipe for it either.

      I think I when I turn in my 2009 Forester XT next year, I will look at getting a loaded Golf TDI. I could definitely use better fuel economy. I make at least one round trip drive a week (240 miles total) from Northeast PA to the NYC area. This one trip costs me about $35-$40 each time. With a Golf TDI, a round trip should be $15-$20 each time. My fuel costs alone would drop by $80+ a month.
      I would be not be sacrificing much: I'd still have usable power, good cargo space, snow tires should help in the snowy winter months in the mountains, I'd have all the bells and whistles, good handling, excellent fuel mileage (each way to town is a 20-25 minute drive), and great comfort and audio.

      In addition to your questions about brakes and tires I would like to know what effect a Cold Air Intake, an altered ECU and the Banks exhaust have.

        Cold air intake will accomplish nothing, because the stock air intake on these cars already draws air from the top of the grill. It is already a "cold air intake" from the factory.

        Having the ECU reprogrammed ordinarily doesn't affect the fuel consumption - it didn't in my case. Of course, if your driving habits are such that you are using the extra power all the time, you're going to use more, but you're also going to jail sooner rather than later. If you drive the same way, the fuel consumption stays very close to the same.

        A low restriction exhaust might help a little, but given that the exhaust on these cars has to go through the turbocharger and then a multitude of catalytic converters that thou shalt not remove or alter, any remaining effect is likely to be too small to notice.

        If you want more power out of a turbo diesel, chipping the ECU is the way to go (and mine has been done). The other stuff that people frequently do to their cars, doesn't accomplish much of anything. Changing hard parts like turbochargers and camshafts gets really expensive really fast, and although you can make power that way, doing this properly is too much money for most people.

      i really hope you got the 6sp manual because other review magazines have long term tested the regular TDI with the dual clutch and found it to be less than stellar.

      This will be informative. The Jetta TDI is on my list of new cars to look at. I'm halfway praying the HPFP takes a dive on them so we can get a better answer why some are grenading.

        indeed! $31K? I would probably go for an A3 for that price

        But there really is no alternative diesle to compare it to in the US (or is there?) so its got that going for it

      May I suggest two things:

      1. Start using a fuel additive to increase the lubricity of the diesel fuel. Diesel fuel in the US does not have enough lubricity to keep the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) happy. There are reports on the TDI club forums of failed pumps. When the pump fails it contaminates the entire fuel system costing $9000 to replace the system. VW has honored the warranty on these failures MOST of the time, but there are times they have refused coverage due to contaminated fuel. If you do not want to use an additve, consider using a quart of B100 (biodiesel). VW allows the use of up to 5% biodiesel on the new TDI. One quart will get the 14.5 gallon tank on the TDI to 2% biodiesel.

      2. Get the ECU flashed for more power. There are tuners who can flash the ECU and add 30-40 hp and 50-60 ft-lb of torque. That will get the car to GTD levels. Ofcourse, the warranty will be toast. But you will have a killer car akin in power the the ACTUAL TDI Cup cars.

        Carerra Motors in Bend, OR will chip your brand new VW, Audi and BMW diesels that allow you to keep your warranty because it is considered a factory approved up-grade. Just so you know.

      We'll support you on the brake pad experiment. Let us know when you're ready and which 2 sets of performance brake pads you would like to do an A-B comparison on.
