In today's automotive world, partnerships are about as common as running across some gushing prose that's been dished out towards a BMW vehicle, which is the same as saying that partnerships are really common. There's nothing wrong with partnering up, as sometimes it's the only way to avoid the demise of company. While many partnerships flounder, some, like the Nissan-Renault deal, appear to move along so smoothly that we're almost convinced that the two brands have become one. Heck, Nissan's chief executive officer Carlos Ghosn believes the two brands have become better than one.

At Nissan's annual shareholder meeting in Japan, Ghosn spoke of the synergies between the two brands and how it affects the development of electric vehicles (EVs). Ghosn said:
I don't think either Renault or Nissan would have been able to launch an EV alone successfully. You can have an electric car alone. But what you cannot have is an EV business system, from batteries to recycling to cars to infrastructure to negotiation, by being alone.
Ghosn aims to add one more partner to the EV mix, setting his sights on Daimler AG:
We're starting to discuss cooperating on motors, cooperating on batteries, on platforms. So hopefully we're going to get three car manufacturers now working together.
If Daimler joins the Nissan-Renault family, all other automakers interested in producing EVs will have to contend with the electric knockout trio of Nissan-Renault-Daimler (with some help from Tesla), and that's some heavy competition.

      but it's just not true. the only tricky part is the batteries and if you can buy those at decent prices then the rest is trivial for a big automaker.

      an electric car is much easier to make than an ICE car.

      and the smarter you make the weight and aerodynamics the easier the succes will be. that will help offset any potential advantage in battery price a bigger automaker with own battery plant might have in very large volume down the road. because you need that much less

      The Nissan/Renault Alliance is pretty impressive. They have consistently been gaining market share and have impoved profitability significantly since the partnership began under the leadership of Carlos Ghosn. Taken together, they are solidly in 4th place globally behind VW/Porshe/Suzuki, Toyota, and GM (only 400,000 units behing GM). Based on global anticipated sales and market share gains this year, they may move up to #3. Go to about 11 minutes in:


      Their EV investment over the past couple decades is massive and is currently escalating rapidly. Both partners are making it the centerpiece of the business plans and a key to growth (along with developing markets). Many smaller companies and also-rans will find it very hard to catch up technologically, and extremely hard to meet the scale and profitability with electric vehicles.

      Those comments could raise doubt over Tesla on the eve of their IPO financing (maybe that's the intention?). If Nissan or Renault (alone) couldn't handle an "EV business system", what's the chance of Tesla doing it?

        I agree with DasBoese about the differences being too great to even compare. Nissan's CEO Carlos Ghosn doesn't even consider Tesla an automaker. When he mentioned them, he kinda shrugged and said that at there volume, he doesn't really consider them with the other automakers.

        I disagree with WorldCitizen,

        There are A LOT of Tesla haters here. Mainly because of the Musk-Eberhard fiasco many years ago. People hold grudges here. Especially against typecast CEOs and Founders (rich boy with a lot of money vs. mild mannered inventor/founder).

        They want Elon to fail so badly... they would see Tesla burn along with him.

        Good point. Perhaps Nissan, Renault and Chrysler could lower Tesla's prospects and buy Tesla themselves.

        Different products, different business models - mainstream vs. luxury niche market.
        None of his concerns apply to Tesla.

        We all want Tesla to continue to survive, if nothing more than because they are a symbol of the first to market an electric vehicle this time around. Preferably as a completely independent company but if they have to join an alliance to stay afloat then it's still a good thing. Tesla needs loads more cash and the other companies (Toyota especially) could benefit from Tesla's proprietary knowledge.

        With the help of Toyota.. or the help of Daimler?

        You can have help from other automakers without having an official "alliance".
