Abarth SS Concept by IED – Click above for high-res image gallery

While Fiat's in-house tuning brand appears to be intensely occupied tweaking Punto Evos and 500Cs for the European market – and supposedly a 500 Abarth for us as well – Abarth also has an eye on its own sports car. According to Autocar, this wouldn't be a microwave job on a Fiat, but a unique creation to serve as a halo car.

We've heard this rumor a number of times, with the most recent reports indicating Abarth has been working with Lotus, perhaps using the next-generation Elise chassis as a base. Apparently, that idea has been nixed. However, the specs being discussed are quite Elise-like: two-seater, mid-engine, 200 horsepower, around 2,000 pounds. Whatever it is, Abarth's head of marketing said it will arrive within two years.

My big interest here is does this translate into an entry level Dodge sports car to join Challenger and Viper? By creating a Dodge version it spreads development costs and optumizes market share/sales in America. I'm not talking a re-badge here, but a total redesign, a unique Dodge vehicle with Pentastar power with a turbo or two.
I've heard there could be a Masarati-Chrysler sports car connection under consideration also to replace the Crossfire. Wouldn't that help both brands if done as above.
The possibilities are excellent with niche vehicles such as these, co-developed by Chrysler and Fiat, to create interesting sports cars with unique drive trains and styling for markets on both sides of the Atlantic.

Yes please! now Fiat, make sure you don't forget to bring this car to the United States. You know the one on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. The county that every other car maker likes to neglect and ignore

best news all year. bring it over as a chrysler!
NO! Do NOT bring it over as a "Chrysler"! Bring it over as an Abarth. That's what it is, that's what has the proper heritage and that's the future of Fiat performance.

Chrysler needs its own path; A technical foundation that suits its brand. This is not it.

This is what the Dodge Demon should be.
Hopefully it can be something special since Lotus is caving to peer pressure.
Bring it but as an Abarth, not as a Chrysler, sice this car is diametrically opposed to anything in Chrysler's lineage or brand identity. Abarth on the other hand, has decades of history of building very fast lightweight giant killers.

They shouldn't bring it over as an Abarth. It will sell more in the US as a Dodge and will help restructure the brand as well as help bring it back from the Viper's death. Abarth may be cool, but I wouldn't know what an Abarth is If I was the general public.

Good to hear, but if they make cars like pic above, they don't have to bother.
        What? please elvarate.

I think the concept on that pic is pure genius.

The proportions remind me of GM Kappa...

That's the first thing I thought of too.

      What? X/19 has no equity?
Depending on the price, it might attract some of those S2000 loyalists who have nowhere to go now.
Absolutely gorgeous. I'll be interested if it doesn't carry the sticker price of a modest house. Well, that plus the trunk has to stay shut. ;D
      • 4 Years Ago
Sweeeeeeeet! Hopefully it isn't a rumour - imagine driving around in one of those! Mind you, bet it will cost a bomb. Major fan of fiat because of their great fuel economy...but I'm guessing this sports car won't be following that trend!
SS? is the super sport? but I wish this car is FR

      Looks like a sneaker.
i hope they go for it, and if they join force with viper, with fiat having ferrari...man they would really build something out of my dream
        • 4 Years Ago
I doubt they would put a Ferrari engine on a Viper or on an Abarth.
Viper belongs to the American tradition, surely it deserves a Pentastar engine.
But I believe that Abarth and Viper(Dodge) can work together and share few things.
